Re: D30 armor

I have always put the "waffley" side next to my back. But I can't say for sure that is correct. It's just how the shop put it into a jacket I bought at the same time. It's better for airflow, but might not be how it's designed to work on impact. Interested to know if someone can point to a...

Re: Help! Cannot unlock seat on 2018 1200RT.

A bit late as I see you got the seat off. I found myself in somewhat the same predicament with some panniers that I had been given. I got a lock pick set off Amazon and watched enough YouTube videos to learn how to pick locks. The cylinder lock on a BMW might be a little better than what I had, but ...

+1 on the Cardo.  Good units and they stand behind them.

Re: Gearing up for my last best bike. Strongly considering the RT. What says you?

The RT is a love/hate relationship for me. The engine and drive train I hate. The comfort for two up and some of the amenities, I love. If I had been able to find a metric bike this light and comfortable with shaft drive, I think I would have gone another way. I'm certainly no fan boy of BMW, but on...

Re: how many ride all year?

Ride year round in Colorado. But not with ice or snow on the road. Though I have been caught in the snow a few times.
I am very cold natured but layer up and go anyway. I do not own a car anymore so I do have to borrow the wife's car sometimes.

Re: Replacement Battery recommendations

This doesn't add much to the discussion but wanted to chime in anyway.... This past summer I was touring the Rockie Mountains and my OEM battery decided to give up after a cold night.  Came out in the morning and nothing when I hit the starter, not even a solenoid click.  I finally...

Re: How many have you owned?

First one, 2012 RT.  Not sure if it's my last. Quirky antiquated engineering is not my thing.  But it is fairly comfortable and lightweight for two up touring.
Only road bike I've owned that burns oil like a city bus and left me stranded on a trip.

Re: How much can I get in panniers and top box?

I carry the wife's gear routinely with no problems. Usually put jacket and pants in the topbox, helmet and boots in the panniers. The helmet would normally fit in the topbox but rain suits and other "stuff" live in there most of the time. Armored jacket, pants and other layers for cold wea...

Re: Summer of Fun on my RT

It is a very different bike for sure, and lacks the silky smoothness and low down power/torque of the V4, but the significant loss of weight was a major factor in changing to the BMW as I have shoulder issues which would have meant me giving up biking otherwise. The ST was also lacking many of the ...

Re: Summer of Fun on my RT

It’s been my first summer with an RT as well, and despite Covid restrictions and the soaring fuel costs my annual mileage is up and I’m enjoying the easy handling and lighter weight of the bike over my previous ST1300. Now just hoping for some decent weather over the winter… Old ST1300 owner here a...

Re: “NEW” 2011 RT, question on oil level sight window

What viscosity oil is in the bike at the moment and how may miles has it done. The 15W50 Motorex Boxer oil is Synthetic. Advantec Pro 15-50: I think that is a semi-synthetic.  BMW branded from the dealer.  1500+ miles on this oil change but had to add 1/2 liter at about the 1200 m...

Re: Flash to Pass

Personally I just have an extra garage door opener clipped to my tank bag, 92 bucks plus the time to install isn’t worth it to me but to each their own… JJ $7.00 dollar marine grade push button from Amazon wired to my extra remote.  Installed on the left upper fairing with the opener velcr...

Re: To Install Crash Bars or Not?

I would install. Things happen and even a drop at low or no speed can be very expensive. I like the look, but even if I didn't I still would have them.

Re: “NEW” 2011 RT, question on oil level sight window

US quart = 0.946 litres Close enough that I sometimes use them interchangeably. I topped off the bike using metric scale on the container, the mechanic discussed in imperial measure so I stayed with that in my comment. Regardless of the system used to measure, it's way more oil use than is acceptab...
