I have read that a poorly charged battery can interrupt the programming on the ZFE and means the calibration can fails and that the sensor settings can be lost.
True - which is why it's advisable to perform the function with the engine running.

Re: 2007 R1200RT ESA: settings can be changed but suspension not moving

Are you sure. When testing my ESA am sure the front moved as same as the rear Absolutely sure. There is no mechanism (ZFE) for altering the preload on ESA1 or ESA2 front units, only damping adjustment - comfort/normal/sport - which is taken care of by the stepper motor in the lower part of the unit.

You can't calibrate the front shock because there is no preload adjustment on that unit.

I'm pretty sure I know the answer to this after such a long time, but is this still available by any chance?

Re: ESA stuck on sport mode?

I had this exact problem on my RT, also 2012 model. It makes them horrible to ride doesn't it? - to the extent that I thought I'd made a horrible mistake moving from an R1100 which was like butter. There is a small stepper motor in the lower end of the shock which operates a needle valve to alter da...

Re: Rear suspension

Second vote for TTech here. Had both my ESA II shocks (2012 RT) rebuilt by them earlier this year - very reasonably priced and it was like having a new bike. Much much cheaper than any replacement shock. Highly recommended.

Re: Bypassing ABS

That seems a rather dramatic approach. What problems exactly? Have you had it properly diagnosed? Fault codes read? It could be something as simple as a wheel sensor gone south or out of adjustment - have you done anything that could have impacted the sensor gap? Please tell us more. These systems a...

Re: Valve clearance

Thanks Boxflyer, that is absolutely fascinating (and a really excellent rundown of the process) - won't be a job ill be doing anytime soon though given the special tools needed. When I did my valve clearances recently I used a steel rule against the flats of the camshaft where the index marks are to...

It’s been my experience that the biggest improvement in performance is to check and reset Cam Timing. This CAN make a noticeable difference on the CamHead, as well as the WetHead/ShiftHead bikes.
Would love to know more about this process - wasn't aware that such a thing was even possible.

Curios to know what you ordered - just had a look around and despite searching for "bmw r1200" got absolutely zilch.

Hello everybody

Hello all, thanks for having me. Been lurking here for a few weeks now since I discovered the forum during a search for info on ESA, and finally got round to signing up properly. Made the move to a twincam 1200 last year after 12 years on an 1100rt (98k miles and still runs like a swiss watch). I ha...
