Re: Gear box and final drive oil...

I found some Bel-Ray synthetic that did not have the limited slip friction modifiers and used that in both holes. I will say the first ride I took on the bike yesterday was about 40 miles and about 3/4 of the way through it, the gearbox decided that Neutral was an optional selection. I was a bit con...

Quick pic of the new to me RTP

Clutch is in, actually got it out for a short ride today. Snapped a quick pic shown here, will do a glamour shoot in the next week. I still have a few more items to address. Getting new brake pads on all three discs, gear/final drive oil and second oil change and then call it good for the moment.

Gear box and final drive oil...

Looks like the dominant recommendation is to use two different oils in the cases. BUT, not sure why, if they specify the same weight why not use the same oil? I have a 1L of Castrol Syntrax (with LS modifier) in 80-95 is there ANY issue with using it in both cases? Thanks! I have 1L of Valvoline Syn...

Re: Dunlop RoadSmart 2

I ran the Road Smart 3's on my last RTP and thought they were great. As good as the Michelin 4's they replaced and substantially less expensive.

Re: 2009 R1200RT-P Clutch Replacement

Looking for the correct clutch alignment tool. Wunderlich says this is the right one, but, they are out of stock. I found one on ebay, that "looks" the same, but trying to verify the part number. Here is the wunderlich part. I don't think their part number is a BMW part # but between the t...

Re: 2009 R1200RT-P Clutch Replacement

I spent about about an hour on the bike today. I took off the panniers, radio box, side trim, muffler and the foot peg support pieces/disconnect rear brake plunger and lever assembly. No drama, one stripped torx screw on the crash bar/pannier frame but came off with some vice grip persuasion. I pres...

Re: 2009 R1200RT-P Clutch Replacement

7300 miles and it needs a clutch?? Someone had to be really hard on it or some other failure. I did mine at 95,300 miles. I've heard of others over 100,000 miles and not replacing yet. Not a huge technical job, PIA, time consuming and requires a lot of removal of panels, parts and connections. Be s...

Re: 2009 R1200RT-P Clutch Replacement

Not a huge issue, but watching videos, I have heard the felt piece on the pushrod referred to as a noise dampener AND a dust shield to keep clutch dust from reaching the slave cylinder.

Re: 2009 R1200RT-P Clutch Replacement

Does mean that the clutch needs replacing. Its coming apart.... there is an internal issue and as of now, based on the previous use of the bike and the friction plate being the likely fail point, I don't think I have any other option than to crack it open and identify the problem and correct it. I ...

David. wrote: Tue Jan 24, 2023 9:12 pm By this do you mean that the clutch is slipping.
Yes, with the slave/pushrod removed, the clutch should be transferring power to the driveshaft/wheel. It is either slipping badly or it is hung up and not making contact with the flywheel.

Re: 2009 R1200RT-P Clutch Replacement

Did you try the bike in gear to see if the clutch friction was any better. Have you tried operating the clutch lever with something in the hole where the push rod goes to see if it moves. It will go into and out of all six gears but NO BITE.... so at least the gear box seems intact. I did not try t...

C'mon this is learn as you go.... : ) If nothing else you can occasionally comment "I wouldn't do that" and other helpful platitudes if you are inclined. I am not even remotely intimidated. I have watched some YouTube and read several threads. Its not all that technically difficult, its ju...

2009 R1200RT-P Clutch Replacement

I thought I would start a separate thread on the clutch replacement. Fortunately for me, there have been other brave souls who have conquered this task that I can use to assist on my own journey, but documenting it on my own thread is a good idea for me and you never know, it may produce a tidbit of...

Re: 09' R1200RT Clutch bleeding DIY

**Update** Went out and acquired a couple of bottles of the magic blue gumball juice and proceeded to bleed the system and have the fresh juice fully pushed through the line and topped off the reservoir. It took almost a whole bottle, but I did buy 2 of course. Wah wah wah..... no change. Still not ...
