Re: New member Aberdeen

Welcome! I've always found that this forum is one of the most friendly and informative. I've just bought a Mineral Grey too! Although, there are no additional driving lights on mine. I was happy to get the colour-matched topbox, but I think it's a bit mean-spirited of BMW not to include the brakelig...

Re: Shift cam 1250RT

Thanks Casbar, that's reassuring to hear that it's 'normal'. Just another BMW 'they all do that' feature then!

Re: Shift cam 1250RT

To get the thread back on topic: I've had my new R1250RT just over a week now and have had the 600-mile running in service done today. Prior to the 1250, I've had two R1200RT LCs and every model of RT since 2001. Initial thoughts on the R1250RT: It seems to be a bit more 'revvy' and spins up easily....

Re: MPG - at the risk of sounding like an anorak...

I have a 2018 R1200RT LC that I'm changing soon, so just out of interest, I looked at the overall average mpg. I bought the bike new and have done 15500 miles in just over 2 years. Leisure rides in the UK, weekends away, IAM observing and four trips to Bavaria and the Alps. In the UK, I use either B...

Re: What did you do today?

Cancelled my trip to the Swiss alps (4-12/9) as I can’t afford to isolate for 2 weeks on my return. Gutted as it was booked this time last year. Thankfully P&O have given me a credit voucher and all the booking.com accommodation was cancellation penalty free. We've had to do something similar :...

Re: What does MU mean ?

Yep, fair point :)  regarding the capacity change. Still seems a parallel situation to me though - engine changes and minor panel revisions, but the rest of the bike is the same. Apart from the front calipers! :)

Re: What does MU mean ?

The 'MU' designation usually refers to the change from the hexhead to the twin cam engine, along with some minor styling changes. I suppose it (MU designation) could equally be applied to describe the change from the original LC to the shiftcam, but doesn't seem to have been adopted in the same way.

Re: Tyre choices

My thoughts are similar to gogs01 and Bandytales. Fit new tyres and it's one less thing to worry about. You'll enjoy the riding more on fresh tyres. Yes, there's a cost consideration involved, but you could always keep the removed part-worns and refit them on your return. I was once caught out, when...

Re: Mixing Tyre Manufactures !!

Interesting discussion. I personally haven't mixed brands, but have no real evidence to say that it's 'bad practice' anyway, other than hearsay. I'm currently running a Metzeler 01 on the front and a Z8 on the back. The bike came with Z8s. I replaced the rear like-for-like, but when I needed a front...

Re: Quick shifter problem?

I've found that for upshifts, preloading the gear pedal and very slightly feathering the throttle, just enough to take the load off the drivetrain, gives me a smoother shift. However, this only seems to work for 2-3-4-5-6. I can't get a smooth 1-2 upchange no matter what I try. Downshifts work smoot...

Re: Topbox

The BMW topboxes do work well and have some good features ( high-level brake light and central locking etc), but they are ridiculously priced. I think BMW would sell far more if they were a sensible price. I take the carpet out and place it over my seat to prevent ferry tiedown straps from damaging ...

Re: Post-lockdown tour

Our summer tour plans have been scuppered too :( . We had a fifteen-day break in Germany/Austria organised, based around visiting the Garmisch-Partenkirchen BMW festival (also cancelled!), with a few days on some of my favourite alpine passes. Not happening now. The Newcastle-Amsterdam DFDS ferry is...

Re: Top boxes

I too have the 49L topbox fitted at all times, also with panniers always mounted. I like the convenience of the topbox (for helmet and gloves etc when I stop) and feel that the additional high-level brakelight is a useful safety aspect. I've noticed a little 'tail wagging' when riding solo in high w...

Re: Issues putting 2018 panels on 2014 RT

I changed from a 2014 to a 2018 (not shift-cam) and I noticed that the upper part of the fairing, where the clear wind deflectors are mounted, is different. The clear deflectors themselves appear to be slightly different too. Not sure if/how this has any effect on the side panel fitment, but maybe i...
