Re: Helmet storing /carrying

My old Aria helmet fitted fine in the top box but when I replaced it, the latest model has higher profile vents.  That said, I found that when I put the helmet on its side in the topbox, the lid shuts fine.

Re: 0-4000rpm PING

There's quite a bit on the net about a 'pinking' sound on acceleration.  I've tried 95 and 97 ron fuel and its still there, but from the frequency of comments, the sound (and I'm only talking about the pinking sound rather than anything else that might be more serious) is common.  ...

Re: helmet help

Sorry - bad tumble 10 years ago.  The visor and chin of the full face helmet were badly damaged.  So full face only for me, no matter what.

Re: adding seat padding

It's often a problem - the lower seat is lower because padding has been removed ... which makes the seat less comfortable for longer trips! If the bike is a long term purchase, it might be worth considering having the suspension lowered, and keeping the the original seat.  Lots of people do...

Re: First big tour

I've toured with Bike Normandy before: they're an English couple living in Normandy who arrange lots of tours on the continent.  Here's a link from their site on what is compulsory and what isn't. It might clear up the confusion in people's minds.

Re: How is the new RT in hot weather?

I've ridden bikes for years with just an all weather textile suit, taking out the liner in summer, but not doing much else. Four years a go, I bought a heated liner, and it transformed my winter riding.  I could manage an hour in minus temperatures, but anything colder than that, it would s...

Re: Servicing - Dealer, Independent or DIY.

There's one thing (well, there's probably more somewhere if you look hard enough) that we can thank the EU for; you can now have warranty work carried out by anyone (VAT registered) provided they use genuine manufacturers parts.  Car and bike manufacturers can no longer insist that in order...

Re: First big tour

Puncture repair kit.  You can wait a long time for recovery.  A repair kit will get you to the next town.  And don't forget a means to inflate the tyre!

Re: Hight...

Just bought a low seat from BMW - £260 ish.

It's better than the standard seat, but if you're used to a cruiser, it will still feel high as most cruisers, including my own, are very low relative to tourers.

Yes, I ride with them off.  I don't need the storage on a day to day basis so I leave them off to prevent potential filtering damage.

Tighten your caps!

I noticed yesterday that I'd lost the black plastic cap that is screwed onto the end of the lower pannier mounting outrigger.  I then checked the one on the other side and both screws were loose so I removed it completely before the cap fell off and went the way of the one on the other side...

iPhone 6 and scalarider Q1 - non BMW sat nav / radio / music solution

So, I've had the R1200RT LE for a couple of months now, having bought it 2nd hand at 9 months old.  It didn't bother me there was no radio prep or Nav V on it, but have found a really good compromise that works for me, although its not as convenient as the BMW equipment I guess. As previous...

Re: 2014- Switch of headlight and Auxiliary after switching on the ignition

Also ... If you've got a remotely dodgy battery, by switching off the lights, all the power is going to the start up.  Some bikes do it automatically - my FJR didn't turn on the headlight until the engine was running.

Re: Deep clean

Saw a good trick once when Autocom fitted an intercom on an RT years ago; they put a small piece of masking tape next to each place they took a bolt out and wrote a number on the masking tape with water based felt tip.  The bolt was then placed on a strip of masking tape on a bench, with th...

Re: Touring Screen

I've used Cee Baileys screens from the USA for a dozen years.  I believe they make aircraft windshields but have branched into motorcycles.  You can specify the width and height and colour (or clear).  Even when bought from the States they arrive quickly and are reasonable...
