Transmission oil change
I watched lots of YouTube videos on this subject before I tackled my own bike. I was amazed that the typical methods were to coat everything under the transmission drain plug with aluminium foil. Often a zip-seal plastic bag was employed to catch the waste oil. I found that using a piece of 50mm alu...

Re: Drive shaft Service
I can't get the suggested options in Australia. Obviously I could get the BMW branded tube from my local BMW dealer but I'd rather not have to mortgage the house. Re: Oil level - after sitting for 12 hours on centre stand
So after riding the bike for a week it has become apparent why bmw advises checking oil at operating temperature. When cold after sitting overnight the window suggests it is overfilled as can be seen in the following image : 20220912_101458~2.jpg After running for 10 seconds and leaving sit a few mi...

Re: 2011 R1200RT Workshop Service Manual
I attempted to get a manual through tradebit website... I ended up downloading a 5GB file which contained "Repair and service data BMW Motorrad Edition 092016". I scanned for nasties before I ran the BMW app. I can't find any workshop manual in it. Is this a scam website? Reviews I read sa...

Re: Oil level - after draining hot, filling cold
That's good news... I was worried about levels with this "check while at operating temperature" method. Then others were saying that you have to put the bike on its side stand for ten minutes to get the oil out of the oil cooler and then put it on its centre stand to check the correct leve...

Re: Battery replacement OEM or Lithium Ion??
Lead, gel or Lithium... An interesting question. It was strange to hear the reasons for taking up the new technology (also the reasons not to). The main reason for taking up Lithium would be the ability to provide energy for longer at a higher rate. Other reasons would include longevity... Lithium w...

Re: Oil level - after draining hot, filling cold
Thankyou, that straightened out the oil filling issue. I was reading the posts about oil here in this section of the forum. Others have mentioned this thermostatic valve issue... I can't imagine why this would be needed but then I have never been told to check my oil level AFTER a ride lol. I have a...

2011 R1200RT Workshop Service Manual
Has anyone managed to obtain a comprehensive workshop service manual for a 2011 model, preferably with complete electric diagrams as well as fully-fledged engine & gearbox servicing information? Do these manuals cover 2007 to 2012? I have been told the Clymer workshop manual is very good. Any fi...

Re: Oil level - filling when cold after draining
PS. Please understand that this picture was taken 6 days after I purchased the bike, I am 1600km from home with limited tools and cleaning/polishing gear. It was very dirty and poorly serviced as can be seen by the sand next to the oil window. I have since spent an hour cleaning just the front wheel...

Oil level - after draining hot, filling cold
I have read the posts on this subject and I am still wondering if I understand the intricacies of this oil system. . The riders manual seems to give a very brief howto. It has always been best practice to drain oil at operating temperature. It has also always been best practice to check your oil lev...

New to me R1200RT in Queensland, Australia.
Hi all, I am in my late 50's and have taken an eleven year break from motorcycling due to my health. I have just decided to join the other brave souls duelling the may-be-texting, may-be-daydreaming car drivers on the roads. Covid (and higher petrol prices) has taken a massive toll on the second han...

Re: Changing the handlebar angle?
Ok lets unpack this... Firstly, if you ask one hundred people with lumbar issues what their symptoms are you'll get nearly one hundred different replies. Injury/old-age disc dessication manifests itself in unfathomable ways. I personally have a complete inability to ride a 'cruiser' style of motorcy...
