Re: Back to an RT

According to Yamaya it weighs 291kg and does 36mpg.  Panniers look like glove compartments.  No wonder it's cheap. Well let's see it's 40lbs heavier than RT and 86lbs lighter than K1600GT, gets real world mpg of around 44, has excellent side cases that you can actually use the ful...

Re: New 2017 gearbox clunk free.

I recommended that BMW should learn Japanese, then take an FJR apart, and learn how to make a quiet tranny. My brother's 2015 FJR-ES may it rest in peace made clunk--he had to learn how to avoid it just like we do.  He had a ritual he went thru that did ultimately solve the N>1st clunk as ...

Re: Back to an RT

Welcome in the K6=>RT club - I still miss the K6 engine, but feel far more home on the RT  :) Logical choice if you like the K6 engine and prefer less weight but aren't married to BMW is the new FJR1300ES.  More sport ergos but very smooth and powerful, ultra-reliable, handles lik...

Re: RT touring screen

Wait until you've ridden the bike before you decide what's wrong with it and what needs changing. Who knows it may be perfect as it is - if you actually get one. Sage wisdom.  6' 3 1/4" w/o shoes, I find the OEM screen perfect FOR ME.  This being said, I ride in a climate tha...

Re: Seems to be getting harder to get from 1st to 2nd gear

Hi. When you say hang in there it will get much better... What are we hanging in there for?  A period of time or number of miles?  Not sure I understand what you mean. My bad, I forgot you have considerable miles on the bike already.  Can you maybe go to a dealer and ask ...

Re: Four weeks in: Observations, comparisons, questions and photos - and a request

I am pronouncing this bikes break-in and evaluation period complete. My '16 RT arrived March 18 and on June 4 we took off on a 9,163m ride.  I noticed the bike just got better and better for shifting (yes I got better at it too) and even engine noise diminished long about 7K miles or so.&a...

Au contraire, everything you write suggests you see only the black ink on the white paper  ^-^

Re: OK - I admit it, I'm tempted...

If you build it Noel, they will come... God knows I've written this post many times in the hope someone in the industry would see it.  Not riding for 28y then getting back on 2y ago I was intimidated by the weight of the modern SST, but having put 13K miles on the RTLC truly it seems like ...

Re: OK - I admit it, I'm tempted...

What's missing in the lineup is the fully comfort-oriented & performance-oriented ST coming in at around 520lbs.  It's effectively your RT but at 520lbs wet, so might look like this: 115HP coming from a V-twin, triple, quad, whatever.  Aim for smooth or pleasant 'character'. Lu...

Re: Quiet helmet recommendations?

Not using ear plugs on long trips translates to hearing loss...if u don't believe it ask me I love music and audio so yes I use earplugs PROPERLY INSERTED as I value my hearing almost more than sight...almost...  I say that because I've seen people w/ disposable plugs practically hanging o...

Re: Seems to be getting harder to get from 1st to 2nd gear

Pre-loading and short-shifting in gears 1 & 2 work best for me. It's amazing the racket that occurs when you forget to pre-load! After 3rd gear I'm all about the Gear Pro in both directions. Best for me is upshifting anytime after 3.5k. Downshifting is best down around 2.5k or less. Too much le...

Re: Tyre pressures fully loaded

I have to ask why you wouldn't go along with the handbook. It can't all be lies put there so we all destroy our tyres as soon as possible so the dealers can sell,us more. Don't forget, I ran the handbook recommended pressures initially, but after very premature cupping ensued I poked around for new...

Re: Four weeks in: Observations, comparisons, questions and photos - and a request

Last thing, who the hell designed the side stand position? If you're old and decrepit you probably already figured this out, but if not I'll pass it on:  100% of the time before you get off the RT be sure you look down and verify the side stand is fully out, and keep the front brake pulled...

You are a man with ideas after me own heart. Lets put our money together and manufacture this puppy. I would ride it. ...and, if we could keep that for a price under 10,000 I think we would have a winner here!! :P With all of the aging boomers out there I'm surprised this configuration hasn't happe...

Re: Four weeks in: Observations, comparisons, questions and photos - and a request

If you wanna get what I mean, ride a K1600 at 80 or 90 miles per hour and feel the difference from an RT No argument there.  I took three test rides on '15 FJR1300ES and same thing I'm sure:  super smooth w/ the parallel quad right up up the rpm range.  But I will say thi...
