REVIEW: 2016 BMW R1200RT - three weeks in

It's been nearly three weeks since I picked up my 2016 Ebony Metallic RT. I've ridden the heck out of it (by my standards) and I've learned enough to give it a full on review. My reviews tend to be long and wordy so for those that don't like to read here's my summary: THIS BIKE IS FRIGGIN' AWESOME! ...

Re: Sargent EM-5 backrest - 4-5 week wait?!?

By the time the backrest comes in 4-5 weeks, you'll realise you didn't need it in the first place! Well, Richard, you were right! But only sort of. Ended up getting a soft top case from Amazon that gives the wife all the back stop she feels she needs. So it was fortunate that they were back ordered...

Re: OK - I admit it, I'm tempted...

I just don't get the GS thing. I mean, they are hugely popular but they are SO ugly they are down fugly! Thankfully, since I'm not 6'2", I can't even get on one without a step-stool so I guess I'll never have to worry about test riding one. Also, I never want to ride off road or even on crappy ...

Re: Sargent EM-5 backrest - 4-5 week wait?!?

It's not for me, it's for the wife. Trust me, she needs it. She's literally hanging on for dear life!

It's purely a function of it being in the middle of the busiest part of the riding season. More just an annoyance of not making sure you have enough stock to keep your customers happy.

Re: New to the forum....hello!

Just went from a huge HD Road Glide CVO to a 2016 RT for pretty much the same reasons as you. I'm just under 5'8" and initially bought the RT with the low seat option and could flat foot the bike with no problem. But the bike is so light compared to the HD that it feels like a scooter. So I swa...

Sargent EM-5 backrest - 4-5 week wait?!?

Ended up ordering a Sargent backrest based on their reputation for making a quality product. Was very disappointed to see that there was a "two to three week" ship date on these parts. My credit card finally got charged but no shipping info so emailed customer support and was further bumme...

Re: Kill switch vs. Key

Never, ever used the kill switch to turn off the bike, only the key, until I went over to Harleys. Using the kill switch I'd the recommended Harley way so go used to it. And now since the RT is keyless I've just continued with that method.

Re: Keyless gas cap won't open and/or close

You know, I don't mind high-tech gadgetry at all. In fact, I like it. But for the love of all things holy, have a backup. Things like 'keyless' ignitions and gas caps should have slots that ACCEPT KEYS JUST IN CASE THE TECH FAILS! That's just common sense. Of course it didn't stop me from buying the...

Re: Another newb question - boxer engine preferred revs?

I'm one of those guys that always reads the manual... usually two or three times to make sure I'm not missing out on something really cool! The problem with this bike is two-fold: It's wicked intuitive so most everything is easy to just figure out on my own by doing. The other problem is that it's j...

Re: Another newb question - boxer engine preferred revs?

Thanks to the many replies and opinions. A few days later of riding and I'm quite used to the engine. Like some of said, I go by feel. I seem to like to 'cruise' between 3-4k. The ShiftPro is pretty useless in gears 1-2-3. 3-4-5-6 are great. I find that as long as I'm increasing speed with throttle ...

Grip Puppies installation question

Just got some new Grip Puppies and they seem like they might be a little long, like a half inch. For those that have installed these did you trim them to size first or just squish them on?

Re: The deal is done - New owner of a 2016 BMW R 1200 RT!!!

This is an outstanding idea! Since we don't tour much I generally don't even have my saddlebags on the bike but if I did, I'd definitely to with an idea like this. Is this something you put together yourself or is there some sort of kit sold specifically for the BMW hard bags? Congratulations on th...

Re: Another newb question - boxer engine preferred revs?

Don't  agree with  4500 being the best change up in Pro shift.  Smooth changes is all down to your right hand . Mine is as smooth as butter at whatever revs I consider its right to change and that is often as low as 2500 rpm. Interesting... what revs do you typically ride...
