After 3000 miles, am I still in love?
You buy something and later the reality kicks in, so after 3000 miles during the winter and spring, am I still in love with my 2015 R1200RT ? I guess I am, but there are some niggles . First the gearbox and its loud first gear clunk, although there are ways around it. Ride at below 30mph and you get...

throttle body sync question
The last two boxers I owned were air heads, R100/7 and R80 , both needed manual throttle body sync using an air flow meter stuck on the carb intakes, plus cable adjustment. I was surprised to find my 2015 is balanced automatically. I have two questions: Firstly, I presume there are stepper motors on...

Re: tappet clearances at 12000 miles
Thanks sakm, that now makes sense.
As this is my first modern boxer, I presumed the tensioner was sprung only. When my bike is around the 20k mark, I will buy the tools and check the
cam timing.
Thanks
Bob

Right tool for the job
I replaced my brake fluid yesterday using the GS911 tool. Yes I can hear you..sakm It was nice to be able to power the ABS pumps to properly flush the system, this is something I could not do on my old K100 . The front caliper bleed nipples are screwed into threaded stubs, which in turn are threaded...

Final drive boot
I have just inspected my final drive splines at 12000 miles, and they were in great shape. Trying to get the driveshaft back onto the output spline was a real swine though. I used staburags 30 PTm grease on the rubber boot. There are people who use red rubber grease, and some guys use a bathroom sea...

Re: tappet clearances at 12000 miles
The need to use the BMW tensioner to set the cam timing is a bit odd to me. Cam chain tension has a big impact on keeping the cams in perfect timing , but to use the special tool , which I presume sets the chain tension different to the normal tensioner, otherwise why use it, means that the cam timi...

Re: tappet clearances at 12000 miles
My offside clearances are all in spec, although there is one suspicious white dob of paint on the inlet cam gear, but nowhere else. Odd
My offside cams are aligned, although not using the proper tensioner tool....

Re: tappet clearances at 12000 miles
Hi sakm, I am aware of the correct way, but as it was only a quick visual check, and my bike starts hot/cold instantly, then it will do until I have my local dealer check them later in the year, it will be cheaper than buying the tools just to use once. The rest of the service schedule I can do myse...

Re: tappet clearances at 12000 miles
spot the obvious mistake...doh.. The nearside cams were in line, although not using the factory tools. She always starts on the first press, so good enough. Will see what the offside cams are like. I can use the 1.98mm shim from my rear exhaust in the front , which will set it at 0.37mm. and the new...

tappet clearances at 12000 miles
I have just started the 12000 mile service on my 2015 R1200rt . The right cylinder valve clearances have yet to be checked. Both left cylinder intake clearances were in the mid range at 0.013mm, but the left front exhaust was 0.035mm and the rear exhaust was 0.030 mm I am surprised at the exhaust cl...

Re: Gerbing or similar heated clothing
My wife has a Keis heated jacket which keeps her toasty on winter rides. It is very well made , and has connections built in for gloves. As I do not like bulking up with excess layers, I have purchased some Keis heated pants, and again , are top quality with an elasticated waist, plus connections in...

Re: Hill Start Control
I thought this was a gimmick as first, but I find myself using it a lot waiting at traffic lights. It is useful to be able to take both hands off and relax until time to go. Using the Hill start control on a hill, I either pull away cleanly or pogo . I find it hard to get it right every time. So now...

Re: Clutch biting point changes
Thanks for the replies.
This appears to annoy some folk, some delve into the mechanics, and some leave alone and put up with it.
As long as it stays consistent, then I will put up with it.

Clutch biting point changes
When I start my 12000 mile 2015 r1200rt from cold, the clutch bites as soon as I move the lever outwards. This has always been the case over the 2000 miles I have ridden since buying the bike last September. As soon as the engine gets to normal temperature, the biting point gets further away, and st...

Re: Gearing up for my last best bike. Strongly considering the RT. What says you?
At 67 years old now , and having ridden most of my life , I consider my 2015 R1200RT my last big bike before having to downsize . It is heavier than my K100LT, but due to the low center of gravity, moving her around the garage and off the center stand is easy . She is a delight to ride, much smoothe...
