Re: Lost Semisphere!

I found the semisphere.  It was lodged in the head.  It was easy to miss...  Glad I found it!  It was located here:

Re: Winter Maintenance List

Ok, I found that little sucker.  It was lodged in the head beside a head fastner here:

I'm so relieved!  I re-assembled everything and all is good again!

Lost Semisphere!

I posted this under "Winter Maintenance" in the maintenance section for my camhead, but I've got a problem and I'm concerned!!! Ok, I have a potential situation.  Any for real BMW mechanics in the house?  Following re-assembly, I started my bike and the right-side cylind...

Re: Winter Maintenance List

Ok, I have a potential situation.  Any for real BMW mechanics in the house?  Following re-assembly, I started my bike and the right-side cylinder made a ticking sound.  Concerned me, so I shut it down, undressed it, and pulled the spark plugs to see if there was something...

Re: Winter Maintenance List

A brief update on my maintenance:  Thorough cleaning, inspection and re-assembly mostly complete.  The front and rear brake pads were due for replacement.  I initially purchased a set from the local dealership, but for $355CDN for a set of brake pads, I was in shock.&...

Re: Shop tools for 2016 1200RTW

So far, the only tools I have needed (aside from a good set of regular metric allan keys, torx sockets, screwdrivers, etc.) is: A set of feeler gauges (for measuring valve clearance) BMW Oil filter wrench 14mm thin wall spark plug socket (amazon.com - $9) Spark plug coil puller tool front axle remov...

Re: Gearbox Oil Twincam RT

I've also used Redline synthetic 75W90 with good results.  It was also less than the Castrol (if you know where to shop).  Same stuff in the final drive - 180ml, if memory serves, and the remainder goes in the transmission.

Re: Winter Maintenance List

Sourced the mirror glass and signal lens from the local dealer.  Both parts are in, and all I'm waiting for now is a 14mm thin wall spark plug socket (ordered off Amazon for $9usd), then I'm ready to begin...  Aw heck, if you can't ride it, you might as well wrench it.  I ...

Re: Winter Maintenance List

On the RT, the mirror housing is just black (not body colored), so any source is going to net the same end result.  The left signal lens and the left mirror glass are all I need.

Re: Winter Maintenance List

My winter time maintenance list just got longer.  I got a little over zealous on some back roads and ended up gently tipping my bike over in a mud puddle.  Left side mirror housing cracked, left side mirror glass broke, and the left side signal light is broken.  Anyone ha...

Re: Winter Maintenance List

Good discussion.  I, too, am well inland a thousand miles, so I'm less concerned about ocean spray, however we do salt the roads here, and "winter is coming" (ha)!  I haven't heard much about ACF50, but thats something I might consider in a coastal environment for sure.&a...

Re: Used stock shocks

You might want to call Beemer Boneyard and see if they have a set of non-ESA hexhead shocks.  They are in the US (not sure which side of the big pond you are on).  I don't know if Beemer boneyard ships internationally or not, but its worth an ask.

Re: Fuel reserve

I did something similar earlier this year.  I ran it to the "0 kms range" was shown, and it was another 40 or so KMs to the next fuel station.  When I filled it, I put in 24.8L or something around there.  Nice to know there's a bit of a cushion.

Re: Winter Maintenance List

I haven't heard of ACF50.  Will google it.  I'll also be doing spark plugs as well.  I'll just dismount the can, the rest can be cleaned without dismounting from the bike (with body work off, and getting down low).

Winter Maintenance List

The riding season is by no means over, but I have some maintenance to do this winter, so this is what my list looks like. I'm interested in whatever other suggestions you might have. Dismount windshield and all body panels. Thorough cleaning (both sides) of all panels.Engine oil, trans and final dri...
