What's the 'foil' for?

Post by Sullivj »

Considering my options for mounting a GPS, and I think I've settled on the BMW mount (linked above).

Apparently, you need to buy item 8 'foil' also.  Does anyone know what the foil is for, and where it goes?

Thanks in advance.

The foil is like clear plastic tape, it wraps around the tubular bar of the bracket before the GPS mount is attached.

The idea may be to prevent the plastic GPS mount scratching the metal bracket & breaking the paint.

I installed the BMW bracket on my 2010 and had it for 3 years, I wasn't aware of the foil so mine was installed without and when removed it looked as good as new.

Thanks Benchmark.  Did you power it from the supplied socket (which I've yet to find).  Any clues on where it is?

From what I've read, I understand you can buy a plug from BMW (83300413585), which has 3 wires on it, two of which, you can connect to your SatNav cable.

I got my power lead from Nippy Normans, and found the connector up under the front left of the bike as viewed from the front. I think I was lucky finding mine as it was fairly obvious when I looked up, others have found it slightly hidden.

Given some of the tales of woe you read about NN's service, you're probably right!

Thanks Benchmark.  I'll see what BMW charge for it, and if it's more expensive - I'll get it from NN.

£15 + P&P from Nippy Normans.....

OR £4.79 from BMW, and they're having it delivered to my local (non motorad) dealer!

The BMW Nav mount was £77.51, and the 'foil' just £2.15.

Thanks for your help guys.  I'll put up some installation pics when it's done.
