Lost all lights and accessory power 2016 RT

Post by bnd7784 »

Hi all, new to the forum. Was looking at the list of issues to see if I could get a hint about my problem. Yesterday while riding, I made a left turn at an intersection and then my fuel gauge went to empty the dash displayed a battery icon (the manual said it means not charging) and upon further inspection found all of the lights (head, tail, brake and turn) and accessory circuit were not working. The bike runs fine, and I checked the voltage display it was steady at 14.2VDC. Once home I checked the fuses, all good. I checked the 50 A regulator fuse, also good. I can turn on the bike and the voltage display shows 12.5 volts, then start the bike and it rises to 14.2 volts so I think it is charging. I am calling the dealer when they open on Tuesday, was just wondering if anyone has had experience with this. My bike is a 2016 R1200RT that I bought new. It currently has 41,000 miles and all services have been done by dealer. Thanks, Brian.

Did the problem occur when it was hot? If it is, then it could be a faulty regulator/rectifier (our intermittent connection). I’d check the electrical values (resistance) for all of the IO.

Update on my issue; took the bike to the servicing dealer. The problems got worse, when I went to load it on my trailer for transport to the dealer it would barely stay running. At the dealer it would start up then stall immediately.

The dealer checked it out and determined that it is a faulty ECU!! The part is ordered and I will know next week if all is well.
I will follow up with this thread.

Thank goodness I purchased the extended warranty!

Why did you have to purchase extended warranty ? 2016 bike is surely covered by manufacturers warranty for 2 years here in UK and I believe you guys across the pond get 3 years.

My warranty was 2 years or 36,000 miles. May 5th was 2 years and I already have 42,000 miles. Also the extended warranty is less expensive ($1400) when it is purchased with the NEW bike, can buy extended warranty any time during the factory warranty but then they consider it a used bike and the same 7 year coverage (5 years actually because the factory covers for first 2) would have cost $2500.

Problem update, new ECU and battery and all is good with the bike again. Battery failed the load test so I had them put in a new one at the time of repair.

Good result. Bet you're glad you had warranty. New ECU and battery sounds expensive.
