Heated Grip Repair

Post by masegraves »

My bike is a 2006 R1200RT. The left (clutch side) heated grip is not working. I've seen posts online for fixing this issue for an R1200GS, but the design of the GS grip is slightly different compared to the RT. Will the same procedure used for the GS also work for the RT. Basically, when the fault is due to the failure of a soldered connection to the heating element, one can peel back the outer rubber grip and re-solder the connection. Thanks for the help.

I had the same problem on an 850 some years ago and discovered the element had broken. I found a repair video on you tube and managed to repair it. the wire is the diameter of a hair and it was a very fiddly process. I believe conductive tape is available these days that could be a simpler repair.

Looking at RealOEM, https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/part?i ... 1317694813
the heated grip on a 2006 R1200RT is the same as that for an R1150GS.

This video shows the grip replacement on an R1150GS, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WERl7PAKrrE

Thanks. That's very helpful. I did not realize the heated grip was the same as that for the R1150GS.
