Speaker space

I’ve read a couple of posts from people who have stored such things as puncture repair kits and mini compressors in the space behind the speaker grills on the LC models.


It seems a good plan, but obviously the space is not waterproof and it appears to have LED heat sinks at the back. Will whatever is in there need to be ‘proofed’ against heat as well as water?


I’ve wrapped the tyre compressor pump in sealed plastic bags and it fits nicely, but I don’t fancy causing a problem for myself… anyone offering advice please?

Assume you're asking about the 2021 model since you refer to LED heatsinks.


There is a fairly large but irregularly shaped "hole" in the bottom/forward section of the speaker housing, so anything in there would need to be secured against falling out as well as water ingress.  I suspect heat is unlikely to be a problem as there is a reasonable distance to the back of the LED housings.


But perhaps a piece of aluminium sheet cut to fit and cover the hole would answer both concerns?


I've fitted the GPS unit for my Innovv K3 system in the right hand housing, stuck down with 3M double sided.


The covers are not so readily removed as on the previous model - there are still 2 screws but the assembly has to be pulled up and off retaining tabs.  Not something I would want to do often for fear of breakage.

I have a 2016 1200RT and store a puncture repair kit in one speaker stowage and a mini compressor in the other, both in their cases. No problems with heat, they fit neatly without any problem. I have a small screwdriver in one of the panniers to enable me to remove the speaker covers if required.

Tried to keep a gap between them and repair kit and pump. Time will tell but never heard of a problem .

Thanks Bob, having found that it all fits quite nicely I'll look at some way of putting a permanent shield between the compressor and heat sink.


I've seen on another site that someone had used the shell of an old speaker unit which made the new storage area completely contained, but from what I can see on the microfiche the shell isn't available from BMW as an individual part.
