Service Manuals?

Post by Randyjaco »

As of yesterday, I am the proud owner of a 2017 R1200RT. Since I started out life as a motorcycle mechanic, I prefer to do my own maintenance. So today I hit Ebay for the standard maintenance CD's. I can't find any that cover my bike. Any suggestions on where to get a Service Manual for my bike?
TIA

Haynes do a manual for the 2014 - 2016 R1200RT, R1200RT | Haynes Publishing it'll be the same as a 2017 model.

Thanks. I live in Friendswood Texas by the way.  I just graduated from an F800ST and am enjoying the upgrade. I guess I will pick up a manual for the 2016 model. You confirmed my presumption that there hadn't been great changes from 2016 to 2017

Boxflyer wrote: The biggest, and best change between the '16 and '17 is the improved end clearances on the transmission gear clusters and the addition of a "shudder damper" to the output shaft of the transmission.  Makes for the perception of smoother shifting.

Also a small change, is the relocation of the water pump weep hole from just an opening on the left engine case FWD of the LH cylinder, to a ridged pipe stub (just above the oil filter) with a rubber tube that carries any drips of coolant down to the underside of the bike near the tip of the shifter lever.

Another subtle change is the range of shim thickness used on the early years('13-"15) of WetHeads to the later years ('16-'21) of both WetHeads and ShiftHeads.  The first few years used a range of thickness down to 1.90mm and the '16 and newer seldom use a shim below 2.10mm.

One more thing to pay attention to is using Low Viscosity DOT4 Brake Fluid.  If you do a parts look-up for 83 13 2 445 461, (https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/part?id=0A13-USA-09-2015-K52-BMW-R_1200_RT_0A03,_0A13_&mg=02&sg=05&diagId=02_0103&q=83132445461) you will see that DOT LV is called for in almost EVERY BMW bike made.  The owners manual only only specifies DOT4, and the performance of these ABS and DTC components require the rapid functionality afforded by the thinner viscosity fluids in the brake systems.

Trust me to have a late 2016 bike on a model change! Looks like I will have to probably figure some of these changes out
