Rear suspension oil leak.

Post by Dlg »

I have just picked up my seconf hand RT 1200 2010 from the BMW dealer.
This morning their is a wet patch on the floor at the bottom of the rear suspension.
It seems to be coming from the bottom casing of the rear suspension where the wire goes in.
I also do not have a preload knob under the rear seat.
Is this normal?

No, oil should not be leaking from the rear shock absorber. The wire and lack of preload knob indicates that the bike is probably fitted with ESA. Is there a switch on the LHS handlebar marked ESA or with an image of a shock absorber.

Thanks David!
Yep it is ESA and has a red spring and 2nd generation ESA.
What other liquid could be dripping from their.
I did jolt the bike a bit when taking it off the trailer.
Excuse my ignorance this is my first BMW.

That looks like an oil leak from the rear shock absorber.

The BMW dealer picked up on the steering bearing but not the rear shock. If all you've done it trailer it home, I'd be going back to the dealer. Just don't tell them it's been bounced off a trailer.

In the UK, a BMW Approved Used Bike would be sold with a 2 year warranty. Having said that, the shock absorbers may only be covered up to 30,000 miles. That is the case with the extended Insured Warranty.

I have trailed it back to the dealer today.
They said that they would get it reconditioned.
The bike has 0 kms from when I picked it up and it was sold as in good working condition.
