where do you find out what the codes M, C, O, etc mean?. All i can find is from Cambrian Tyre's

The version codes mean that a particular tyre has been developed by the tyre manufacturer and approved/recommended for use by the motorcycle manufacturer for a specific model.

As an example, if using a Z8, the Metzeler fitment guide recommends front (M) and rear (O).

Speed rating 'ZR'.. Weight rating Front '58W'.. Rear '73W'.. All the rest is just Hotpoint recommends Persil and 8 out of 10 Cats prefer Whiskers.
The GS 'is' the better bike :-)

Found that "E" & "O" means original equipment. Then there is "E" which means it's up to European standard. The others are just a code for the manufacturer or as Simbo says what washing temperature.

I had a pair of Metzeler Roadtec 01 SE's. Good tyres, but only lasted me approx 4500 miles.

Interesting that the only photos I've seen of this type of tyre wear is with Metzeler Z6's, Z8's and now 01's. They seem to break up in the centre and go down to the cords without much warning.

I used the correct recommended rear [C] version code Z6 but still experienced them breaking up in the centre and on one occasion, down to the cords.

From what I can see, the HWM rear tyre has a 2 ply carcass to increase stability. The standard tyres only have 1 ply. Both appear to have the same dual compound rubber which presumably dictates how the tyre wears. If this is the case, the tyres might wear the same but give a different feel to the ride.

This video is how an Avon tyre is manufactured. The carcass (plies) being built before the tread is fitted. If this is the same for all tyres, then it shows that the carcass construction and the tread are separate parts bonded together. When the tyre starts to break up in the centre, it's likely to be the bond between the carcass and tread de-laminating before showing the cords of the ply.
