2014 RT Transmission

I have a 2014 R11200RT and a 2009 R1200GS. the GS transmission is silky smooth and the RT is clunky. I suspect it is the 10-50 oil used in the new engine/transmission. It was suggested to me to add some STP to the oil. I had a Yamaha FJR1300 and remember adding STP to that motor to smooth out the transmission. Any comments?

Oil for the LC is fully synthetic 5-40 and of course the gearbox is integral with the engine.  I would add nothing to it. You will probable find  it will get smoother with age.

The LC Rider's Manuals says, "SAE 5W-40, API SL / JASO MA2, additives (e.g. molybdenum-based) are not permissible because they can attack coated components of the engine,
BMW Motorrad recommends Castrol Power 1 Racing 4T SAE 5W-40, API SL / JASO MA2".

Yes, BMW (in conjunction with Castrol), have downgraded the engine oil specification from 10w-50 Fully Synthetic API SL to 15w-50 Part Synthetic API SJ.

+1 Agree. LC has wet clutch do not add anything to it and only use the correct spec oil. Mine has clock 6K now and gearbox is much smoother compared to when it was new. Some of that is bedding in and some I guess is just learning how to use the BM box, adapting and getting a better technique.

I'm up to about 2,000 miles now on my LC (with gear-assist).  No major gear box complaints - at least not as far as smoothness is concerned.


I do wish Neutral were easier to find.  My Multistrada had 5 neutrals - one between each pair of gears.  The RT seems to only have half a neutral - I can't even find it coming down from 2nd!

I agree about finding neutral. I think half the trouble is if you have Pro shift that requires a good push or pull whereas neutral needs a very gentle lift or press.  So its a matter of getting the brain to remember the difference.  There is definitely only one of them in there though.  .
