In Mexico with a "check oil" message

Post by andydavis »

I'm currently in Isla Mujeres. My 2009 has been great for the last 3000+ miles aside from a burst fork seal from the pinche topes. The (as yet nameless) RT had fresh oil and filter before I left, but I got a disturbing "check oil" message en route yesterday across the top of Yucatan from Merida. Oil looks fresh and exactly halfway up the inspection window. Is this an actual oil level message or oil pressure? Ambient temperature was about 30C and I wasn't particularly flogging the bike...going on average 80mph for about 4 hours...I don't think it was particularly overheated.

I'm waiting for the ferry

Low engine oil pressure is shown by the general warning light (triangle) flashing red, together with oil-can symbol appearing on the display.

Engine oil level too low is shown by the symbol <!> + "Oil" appearing on the display.

The oil sensor might be defective if the "Check oil level" message appears even though a check at the oil sight glass reveals that the oil level is correct.

No oil pressure light... so there is some oil level float switch. Maybe it's just stuck or something. I will maybe try an oil change, see if fresh oil helps it

The oil level warning sensor might be faulty. It can be removed, cleaned and tested or replaced if necessary.

Using an engine flush together with the oil & filter change may help.

How did that work out for you?
I have a 2010 R1200RT and have had the yellow warning with oil symbol a few times.

All I had ro do was add oil.

Now I keep a bottle of engine oil in one of my bags.
