taller wind screen for rt?

Post by slowvet »

Went for my first long jaunt yesterday since owning this bike. Around 300 miles through the Anza Borrego desert, beautiful time of year with uncrowded 2 lane roads. I had the screen all the way up which made a huge difference as far as helmet buffeting goes but still not quite enough to relieve my sore neck. I'm 6' so it's not that like I'm to tall. I think I'll try lowering the seat first to get me more in the pocket but if that doesn't work maybe it's time for a taller screen. Any advice?

Also have a look at CEE Bailey screens. I have a slightly taller one on my 2013 RT.

Don't think BMW do a taller screen for a 2011 RT.

Have tried a couple of CEE Baileys screens on both my 2007 & 2010 RT's.

Yes, they will help to reduce buffeting & wind noise etc.,
however, the increased surface area & therefore force on the screen can potentially cause problems with the mounting brackets & electric motor.

I found that sometimes the motor wouldn't drive the screen up & down, so ditched the idea.

Wearing ear protectors & becoming "Bike Fit" was the answer for me.

Bike fit, didn't think of that. It has been years since I've had saddle time, more saddle time is in order.

Slowvet    Have you thought about a laminar lip??

I tend to ride with the screen top about level with my nose, the wind goes above my helmet. In fact at 70/80 mph I can keep my visor open

In towns ,slow speeds and manoeuvring  I tend  drop it to its lowest level. Im about 5ft 10 and use both the the standard seat / low seat when wifes on.

I might be mistaken but I don't think the screen on my 2011 (even though its wider at the top) is as good as the one that was fitted to my 2005 RT.

Cee Bailey makes a tall windshield.  I am 6-4 and use it.  You can find info an a picture here:

If you have an older RT, the info and picture is here:

The arms on previous R1200RTs were thinner and prone to breakage."

That is crazy.

Never had a problem with an electric screen going up and down with a tall Cee Bailey shield on an R1200RT, an  R1150RT,  or a 2005 through 2015 R1200RT.

The only problems I have ever seen on any model of RT have been electrical ones.  Never overloaded motors or broken connection parts.  All you loose with a larger screen is mpg.

The benefit I find with the taller screen is that it's in the lowest position most of the time anyway. I can't see that an extra inch or two makes too much difference on performance, after all it's an RT not an RR.

Still get 55mpg and rarely cruise over 80mph, just not worth it nowadays and additionally you get to see more riding slower.

2 identical RTs  one with the screen up and one down. Over a 600 mile trip each time we filled up the bike with the screen down cost £5 less to fill even though it was more heavily loaded.
