Hi all, I recently purchased a 2016 R1200RT LC with 60,000km and full BMW service history, I took it out today for the first time and the bike seems to run fine, Neutral to 1st and 1st to 2nd was a bit clunky which I believe is fairly common but 3rd 4th 5th 6th and back down especially using the shift assist was super smooth and works really well, I noticed that the oil level was too high in the sight glass and so drained off 60ml approx until the level was correct according to the owners manual, looking at the oil I drained off I noticed some fine metal particles (nothing too nasty) according to the last service invoice the oil was changed in January 2024 at 58000km. My question is would this to be expected in a bike with a wet clutch and shift assist as I've only ever seen some metal particles in a first oil change on a new engine.
thanks for any advise.
New to me R1200RT LC 2016 oil question
Re: New to me R1200RT LC 2016 oil question
Hi, thanks for your reply, I contacted my local Bmw motorrad dealership and have scheduled a service which they have confirmed is an intermediate one as last major service was carried out at 56000km, this will keep my service record up to date and continued Europe wide breakdown cover for a further 12months (I plan to do an Alpine trip late spring 2025) I had one other question, I've been out on the bike a few times now and am very impressed at how it handles for such a large bike through the twisties far more chuckable than my Honda Blackbird. Back to my question.....the motor is very quiet and smooth on start up from cold but after a decent run when it's up to full operating temp I have a fair amount of gearbox chatter which disappears once the clutch lever is engaged, do you know if this is typical of this model ?
cheers.

Normal for some clutch rattle. I wouldn't worry. If you have slipping or finding it very hard to select gears then it's a possibility it needs a new clutch kit.
Trust me I am a retired Doctor and lecturer at Oxford University of Structural and Mechanical/Electrical engineering.

My 2016 rattles until you pull the clutch in
Clutch rattle is pretty normal across a lot of bikes

R1200RT LC 2018 gearbox oil question
Hi Everyone from down under New Zealand
I'm hoping to find help with how to replace the gearbox oil on my 2018 R1200RT LC.
I've noted on line there is plenty of info on earlier RT models (pre 2014 / non Liquid Cooled models)
On my RT, I can clearly see the gearbox fill plug on the left side upper side of the gearbox, but the gearbox oil drainplug is a bit of a mystery.
What looks like could be the gearbox oil drainplug sits below the engine oil filter, and is located between the exhaust and engine casing. This seems unlikely to be the gearbox drain plug because it's directly below the engine oil filter? and is hard to access with an allen key because the exhaust is in the way.
The engine oil drain plug is in plain sight, easy to access with a 8mm allen key. I use it to replace the engine oil.
I'm keen to change the gearbox oil as well, because oil is cheap, and a gearbox repair isn't.
My bike is on 24,000 miles now (40,000km)
Thanks in advance, any advice on pointing me in the right direction is appreciated.

Re: New to me R1200RT LC 2016 oil question
There’s a LOT to comment on here…
1. The 2018 WetHead has an integrated transmission with the crankcase and shares the engine oil for lubrication.
2. The plug on the left side of the engine is the 8mm hex cover used to access the TDC slot on the rotor of the alternator.
3. The plug you describe under the oil filter right next to the exhaust pipe is the cap/plug holding the oil pressure regulating valve and spring. Do NOT remove it as it requires removal of the header to correctly line it up to reinstall it.
4. The engine/transmission oil is drained from a plug with a 10mm hex.
You could pick up some important tips from my YouTube videos.

Re: New to me R1200RT LC 2016 oil question
Hi Boxflyer,
Thank you for clearing up my questions.
The information you have provided is gold :-)
It's good to know that the transmission and gearbox shares the same oil, this is excellent.
I won't be touching the 8mm hex cover used to access the TDC slot on the rotor of the alternator (it sounds terrifying).
As with my previous bike, I only use the Motul fully synthetic engine oil, so am hoping to see +100,000 miles on the dial with no engine issues.
Besides the usual recommended maintenance (I see the list is long), is there anything else I should/could be doing as preventative maintenance?
I have a GS911 diagnostic tool which I find super helpful.
Thanks again for your valuable insights :-)
