So one ebayer didn’t seem bothered to answer a couple of questions, another would rather local collection rather than posting so bit the bullet and bought new from my bmw parts guy, £365 for the box, lock set and back pad inc delivery. Not cheap but a good discount.

I replaced the lock today on mine.
I had to take the bottom half of the box apart which was a bitch of a job to do and to put back togather.
But now i know how to take it apart when i am ready to paint it.

You can remove the lock without taking them apart providing you have the key for it

If there is no lock fitted you dont need to take it apart, the new lock just slides in.
Also if you have a pic and know how to use it, again you dont need to take it apart. I did'nt. and don't.
There is no way of pushing the last locking waffer in without a pic tto slide the lock out.
The back of the lock inside the box is covered and you need to remove this cover, which can only be done by taking the lower part of the box apart.
Also found that the lock had been drilled out before as the was loads of metal bit inside.

The top box bag is here andits just what i needed to keep everything tidy inside the top box.

Also i said to the wife i need a new key ring for the top box key. She then popped into the bedroom and came back with a key ring in hand.

It made me smile , but it will do the job nicely.

No mate not yet. She does not go pillion much anyway on the RT as she rides her own bike. She goes pillion in the winter mostly on the Varadero.

Ah okay, I’m wondering if a led brake light could be installed on the 28L box ?, maybe even using a BMW plug for plug n play as in the 49L ?.

When I popped out this morning I noticed the weight difference with the smaller 28ltr top case, felt more nimble on the go. I was going to have the top lid sprayed white to match but I think it looks ok all black.

Not had time the last 2 weeks to get out on the bike to try it with the smaller top box.
Will try this week, but again a busy week ahead for me.
