A little bit more research has revealed that there are 2 Map versions, NT & NTU.

It sounds like NTU is the latest version & are updated up to 4 times per year, whereas, NT are only updated twice per year.

My Garmin Zumo 660 was purchased in March 2011, this change may have taken place since 2010.

If you have a look at the loaded maps in your 660 it will show if its got NT or NTU.  The software connected to this latest update seems to have changed the format of some apps like the saved routes as its showing the dates they were last used.  There's also an app by date that pulls up your journey. Can't remember that being there before.

My 660 does indeed have NT Maps installed.

A phone call to Garmin Customer Services has confirmed the above differences in Updates between NT & NTU Devices.

Is it necessary to format the SD card first?  I did the firmware update  last week sometime and the map update earlier this week,  but just plugged it in and downloaded to computer and device
As I haven't used the satnav since am I likely to have issues by not formatting the card  prior to updating?

I put the card in my Nav V (straight out of the packet) before I updated and because it saw the extra space it placed the updated maps on the SD card  :)

What size SD Card do you have in your Device, I only have a 4 GB SD Card installed in my Device.

Before starting the Map Update, Garmin Express said, "a Memory Card is needed as all the information will not fit on the Device's internal memory".

My understanding is that Formatting the SD Card clears it & gives sufficient Memory for the Map Update.

I think it's a 16gb card?  I wonder if it put the map on the card or device or both

Garmin Express should decide that for you and offer to install on the card as the update is too big for the device.  ;)

I checked to see what maps are on my device.. Europe DEM
                                                                    CN Europe NTU
                                                                    2016.20 3D
                                                                    CN Europe NTU
                                                                    2016.20 ALL
Removed SD card (32gb) and checked what maps remained..  All of the above, so I seems Garmin express put the updates on my device and not my SD card
