BMW R1200RT/R1250RT Forum

i am curious to know how others feel about the reliability factor of the R1200RT the year model after the 2014 model.  Are we assured that the problem has been resolved with the 2015 model?  I am thinking about purchasing a 2015 R1200RT and would like to know what others think about the reliability of the model and will it hold up without spending a great deal of time in the shop.  Please let me know.

I have 9976 of uninterrupted and reliable miles from my non recall2014 so far.  I couldn't be more pleased.

I don't recall the article, but a recent one looked at the reliability of all the manufactures. BMW, HD and Ducati all scored the lowest reliability on the whole as a bike manufacturers. A quick google search yielded this, http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/news ... /index.htm not the same article Im refering to, but more or less the same results.

Mine is an early (April 2014) model that was recalled for re rear shock.  It also had a recall for the right switch gear. And that's it.  Uses no oil, coolant and not a lot of fuel. 
Compared to my previous 2 K1600s its a Swiss watch. 

I think with consumer reports and surveys you have to wonder how they end up with the figures.  Do they consider a case where a manufacturer recalled thousands of its  product to fix a part that has been damaged by ham fisted owners as a failure. I can imagine a Japanese brand recalling their bikes to replace rear wheel flanges on about 10 years production. 

6,000 post-recall miles.  Just one minor issue - a failed switch on the auxiliary driving lights.


Otherwise, like RTMan, the only thing I've added in is the odd drop of fuel and some new tyres...

Just coming up to the 12000 mile service.
L/H switch changed, cruise control packed up.
New swingarm due to corrosion.
Complete exhaust system, sticking exhaust valve.
New rear disc & pads, excessive pad wear.
Most of the R/H side replaced, prat who hit me up the derriere!
Paint rubbing off the side panels, BMW say fair wear & tear.
Other than that, not used any oil. No water pump leaks.
The motor goes great, fingers crossed :not speak:

Well my LC is 2 weeks away form its first birthday, done 14000 miles and has been 100% reliable. Apart from a ding on the right exhaust header, god knows what hit that, the bike looks like new. Zero corrosion. So far well pleased.

You're referring to the rear fork? Can you elaborate on this?

I have had my RT from new May 2014, apart from the recall for the shock, it has toured Wales and Germany in 7000 faultless miles, no oil used! Fantastic reliability and super comfortable with Sargent Saddles fitted as well.

7000 miles on my 2014 model since January this year, Bike was one of the bikes recalled and new shock fitted after 500 miles. Took it down to South France and the Alps in June in pretty hot weather and rode it in all weathers in UK in early 2015 (including some pretty cold days when it was only marginally above freezing. Not a single blip to report. Fingers crossed that continues.

12500 Miles on my late 2013 made 2014 model, only problem is broken tabs on side panels

Yep, just before it meets the rubber joint that covers the uv joint...

I have got the same on one side, annoying and due to a pretty tacky design I think. Panels should screw fit.

The finish corroding or the actual aluminum? My 07R suffered a bad drive shaft due to a transmission seal failure. I had to pull the fork to replace the shaft. The fork was a monster, just trying to understand what went wrong w the fork.
