Final Drive Overhaul

Some of the Final Drive Casing Bolts on my 2012 RT are slightly corroded, having given them a clean with Solvol Autosol , a toothbrush & some 00 grade wire wool, then a squirt of ACF-50, they are looking more acceptable.

Also, on the inside of the FD Unit, (silver part behind the disc),  the paint finish looks rough but not broken, don't know if this is just a poor casting or something going on underneath the paint.

Doing a bit of research "Google", has come up with Mike Overy of Overland & Classic, he overhauls FD Units.

Having spoken to Mike, he is happy for his details to be posted here.
His Workshop is at, Hall Farm, Holwell, nr Melton Mowbray, LE14 4SZ.
Mobile No. 07786 340692.

It's nice to know, there is someone out there, who can Overhaul FD Units if necessary.

If the Casing Bolts are changed, Mike suggested a Torque setting of 30Nm.
For the record, the bolts are £1.70 each x 10 off, http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/part?id ... 3117686682
I'd be looking at getting some Stainless Steel ones from a local supplier.

Here is a thread posted by Mike on Adventure Bike Rider, showing the Overhaul of a FD Unit,

If nothing else, it may be worth posting the details for future reference.

This photo shows an example of a particularly "grubby" Final Drive Unit, the bolts can be clearly seen, (not 2012).

Steve Grover (Motoscot near Dunstable) overhauled my FD unit. Apparently the trick is to shim the bearings "just right".

A BMW Dealer will do the same job, but I am not sure that the specified workshop time for the task according to BMW would allow them to take the same sort of care.

Although not in English, this video shows one method of replacing the Rear Wheel Flange, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=veilFcDC2zc

Decided to "bite the bullet" & change the FD casing bolts, probably a timely task, some of the threads/holes were certainly badly corroded.

Stig Fasteners came up trumps, got 10 off M8 x 30 Stainless Steel Socket Button Screws & Washers for £4.00.

At £2.30 each, that's £23.00 for BMW bolts that corrode.
