Bit puzzled as to where you applied the Copper Grease. Don't know if things have changed these days but I always thought that the sliding drive gear components (if that's what you are refering to) should be clean and "dry".

The Haynes Manual says that, "no individual components are available for the starter motor or solenoid."

RealOEM only shows the Starter as a complete unit, http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/showpar ... Id=12_1622

A bit of research (Google) has come up with Valeo D6G2 as a replacement for the BMW Part No. 12417712231,

Looks like a Brush Set is available for the Valeo D6G2.

This website looks useful for cross-referencing BMW Part Nos. http://infopart.org/bmw-12417712231-part

Not sure you should be using copper grease (copper-slip)on a moving part as it is an anti seize compound not a lubricant.

It will cause wear in time.
If you were to lubricate the shaft at all it may have been better to use molybdenum paste or molybdenum grease.

Not having seen a Starter Motor replaced on a 1200 RT, found this video, OK, it's for an 1150, is it the same/similar for the 1200, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ml43uG8QcGU
