Question for the Police riders of the forum

Post by Maz12 »

here's a video you may have seen or may even been amoungst the riders,  assuming it's for the Tour de France not too long ago,
There's a marked difference between the British and French formations,  is there a specific reason why?
I thought it would be fairly standardised in Europe,  gotta say it's quite impressive to watch
Sorry I don't know how to post the video so will post the link instead,  if anyone (Dave) knows how to post it feel free.

I sometimes think there is very little logic to anything road wise in France.  They now insist we stick bits of reflective plastic on our helmets, last year it was breathalizers under pain of death but now there is no fine for not bothering. And ride down any sunny warm road there and all the bike cops have their short sleeve shirts on and no gloves.  Whatever formation they ride in they probably just made it up at the time.

This is how Durham Police escorted the Olympic Torch through Consett in 2012.

In South Yorks we always rode 2 abreast if there was a lot of us going from  A to B, it makes the convoy shorter

But in the 80s there were 26 M/Cs Ive heard now that there are only about 5 dedicated bikers plus a few more that they can call on and I understand they only have 10 bikes altogether.

How times change.

Liked the Durham vid,  been there done that but on my occasion it was my fault ,going to a job, everything on, looking to the right on a left junction

Traffic car coming from  my right everything on, the driver waves for me to go.

The car in front cleared the junction and slammed all on, too late my bike disappeared under the car, bugger. To the amusment of others the damned two tones wouldnt switch off straight away.

Inspector comes out and took my permit off me but had to re instate me 2 hrs later as we were working a football match and there was only 2 of us available.

Had to do a check test a couple of days later.

Happy times

Ouch, brings back memories of a near identical occurrence which happened to me in Northallerton high street a couple of years ago which changed my following distance for good. Following a lady driving a large 4 x 4 in very slow traffic she suddenly spotted a parking space she had just passed, slammed it into reverse and despite my blasting twin horns and hi vis jacket very nearly had me off. It was only because I managed to lean the RT away from her offside rear wing as she actually brushed my left boot  that I managed to avoid a fall. I leave a much bigger gap (escape route) now.
(sorry to drift off thread a bit)
