Happy with my RT
If the opportunity and space would allow, the cockroach of bikes ( meant in a very good way) KLR650 would join my garage, simple, rugged, easy to maintain, inexpensive and you can't kill em

Great choice I think for the purpose you want it for. Very light weight, which I find important, and it seems the latest model has smoothed out the single cylinder vibes to a large extent. It's almost certain if you are a competent rider that it can keep up with GSs and Tigers etc. on the mucky back lanes that you mention because absolute power is not the issue in those circumstance.

Here's a review vid:

and a written one from Roland Brown

Chain drive though but that's probably not important to you.

Slip on a bit of gravel and lay it down and you will discover why we leave the panniers on.

A nice 1150gs, up to 2002 with the black finished engine and gearbox so as to avoid servo brakes, twin spark engine and deteriorating build quality.
I run my 1200RT along side my 1150gs. If I want a more involving ride I take the gs.:-)

Going to try and get a couple of test rides in this weekend.

KTM 1050 and Duke.  Also hoping to give Africa Twin a spin.

Of course, no decision before riding...

My second is a 2016 Vespa GTS 300 - Great for the city!

I don't need two big bikes - That's why I sold the Electra Glide.
