Fresh Meat

Post by guest3713 »

Greetings Fellow Riders! I'm trading my '13 K1600GTL on Saturday for a 'Spankin new R1200RT in Ebony Metallic. I've been monitoring the forum for a few weeks now learning which accessories I think I'd like out of the gate and have learned a great deal from all of you with regard to what works well, what does not, and what is mostly subjective. So, thanks to all of you for your contributions. For anyone wondering why I'd trade the K1600 for the RT, I have several reasons. First of which is my better half doesn't like to ride with me nearly as much as she once did. And, not that the RT isn't a very capable two-up touring machine, but riding solo most of the time, I just don't need the LARGEST, heaviest BMW bike available. My study of the specs reveals the RT actually has a very slight edge in the engine power to weight ratio over the K. A thorough test ride revealed the RT to be very sporty in my opinion and I still love the touring capability. Furthermore, the K was at the end of its warranty. While my K engine has been trouble free thus far, I'm afraid to own that engine without an extended warranty which runs in the neighborhood of $1700-$2000 here. Another consideration was the fact the boxer has been THE BMW motorcycle engine "tried and true" for a half century or more, and since appearance of the water boxer, I've felt it was destiny to ride one...
PS. I recognize a couple of other K1600 forum defectors here as well...
Best regards,
Brian

Welcome Brian from another who swapped from a k1600 to the RT, from my perspective I miss the K's power/torque but don't miss the weight. I found the RT more sporty, comfort more or less the same but do enjoy the quick shifter and strangely the hill assist on the RT.

enjoy the RT it's a great bike in its own rightbe

Welcome to this great forum Brian. You certainly will enjoy the spankin' new RT LC! Mind you, the acceleration, although not bad for a boxer twin, won't compare to the big ol' six cylinder K! :)
