First BMW, 2005 R 1200 RT, Engine question.

Hi guys, after over 35 years of riding, I have just got my first BMW, 2005 R1200RT, 38000milez, full history, outstanding condition for its age.
My question is about the engine having never owned a boxer twin before.
When I move away, especially uphill, the engine sounds like a diesel upto about 3000rpm or so. When cruising its very smooth & quiet.
Is this engine 'knocking' sound normal under load at low revs, or do I have a problem?

What Octane rating fuel are you using.

Super unleaded, it was nearly empty when I filled up.

Hi Bob, I had the same sensation/concern when I first got mine. After 30+ years of inline 4's it took a little getting use to. Also I went through the precision tuning ritual (Plugs, Valves, Sync, TPS Reset and a few doses of Techron) which seemed to smooth it out a lot. And of course always run the highest octane you can find. Not saying there isn't an issue, but IMO I bet an adjustment phase is all that's needed.

Good Luck and enjoy!

Cheers Mate, that puts my mind at rest somewhat, I'm used to 4's & triumph triples (again not the smoothest at low revs), I suppose the huge pistons in the boxer don't help, I love the bike, but just wanted some re-assurance that all is as it should be.
Ride safe.
