You don't need a new key.  Just get the lock re-coded.  Should cost next to nothing.

The lock is easy to recode if it's in the LOCKED position, with the box open.

If the lock is in the OPEN position, it's VERY difficult to extract and re-code.

I remember taking my small top box to my dealer to code the lock.  No key but the case was closed with the lock unlocked.
Just asked the tech who did it in which position it it easier to extract the barrel.  He said best in the unlocked position.  There you go.  Must depend on the whos doing it.

I can only speak from my own experience of the 49 litre case, and ALL of the tutorials I watched on YouTube.

With the lock in the unlocked position, the retaining tab can be reached, but is SO difficult that most people drill the barrel instead.

Good decision. You've made life much easier for the recipient.

r

I have been watching the clips on you tube and plan to have a go myself. I know my way around spanners as have done most of my own servicing/repairs on both cars and motorcycles, so am pretty confident in doing it although this is my first BMW

It could be possible to resort the fins to match your key, without needing any more fins.

More likely that you might need a couple from the dealer.  Most charge about £20 to remove the barrel, and recode it, providing new fins if required.  Because you'll probably need some fins, you might prefer to let them do it.

When I eventually get around to selling my own 49 Litre Top Case I will include the two keys which came with the case when I bought it new from my BMW Dealer. I only use the case on a couple of occasions a year and although it means carrying a dedicated key in my jacket pocket this is of no great hardship. When I bought the Case I do recall the dealer saying they could re-code the lock to accept my bike's ignition key but forseeing future problems (such as those highlighted in this thread) when I eventually came to sell the case on I declined.

From RealOEM, it appears that there are two options for top case locks & keys.

51257681200 Lock cylinder with VIN code - "This lock is coded to match your bike's key so we'll need your VIN to order it."
or
51257688957 Lock cylinder with key.

When I purchased my 49l top case, the bike was at the dealers being repaired, perhaps they ordered the lock with VIN code, or recoded the lock with key & threw away the spare keys, I'll never know.

The top case is now on it's third RT, at the time of new bike purchase (x2),  the dealer has recoded the lock to the ignition key.

The VIN version of the lock set is the VERY EXPENSE version.  I've never known anybody order one of them for a pannier or top box. However on some of the newer types like the GSA you have no choice as the barrels cannot be recoded.
