Cleaning lc pipes

Post by Sooty57 »

Newbie here, so be gentle with me ;)
I have just bought a 2014 R1200RT LE, and am a little confused about the material used for the downpipes and collector box - more importantly, what to clean them with. I had an F800GT with a full stainless steel system, and used OptiGlanz Stainless Steel Cleaner from Nippy Normans (brilliant stuff). I know the silencer on my RT is chrome plated, but the dealer told me the downpipes and collector box are stainless. However, on inspection, they appear to be plated.
I am reluctant to put OptiGlanz on them for fear of b*gg*ering up the plating (if any). Has anyone used OptiGlanz on RT pipes?

It's all chromed with just  a couple of sections underneath the cover stainless.  I only use Autosol.  As with all of them you will not get rid of the colouring at the front.

I find this works better than Autosol.  The consistency is slightly thicker, so you tend to use less.

They say it's for stainless products and recommend something else for chrome.

It also says
AluTech works wonders on brass, nickel, Titanium and other metals too.
so not quite that specific  ;)

Says it's designed to remove scratches so it must be quite abrasive. Not something I would use regularly on chrome.  Autosol might not be as thick but then again it's only a couple of quid a tube.

What do the dealers know, they only sell the bikes.

Thanks for the info guys. Bloody annoying thing is that I've just ordered a new bottle of OptiGlanz at £15 a pop, and it will probably sit unused on the shelf.  :-X

Do they have any stainless steel parts? I understood they were made from a mixture of Mom's apple pie and bullsh*t.
