gear change indicator faulty

hi, has anyone had a problem with the gear selection indicator on the display mine is giving the wrong gear. if the bike is in neutral the gear display would read 2nd and so on. my bike is an 05 bmwr1200rt.

Probably a defective switch. They can be effected by damp.
