'07 1200RT Side case opening lever broken

I went to open the side case on my '07 R1200RT and heard a snap as I lifted the lever.  The lever now moves freely without any resistance and does not disengage the latch.  Anyone know how to fix this?  Thanks.

and even more importantly, how do you open the case to work on the innards...?

Are you saying you had already pushed the lock in and then when you tried lifting the lever further up it failed. If so that's not good .  You might be able to undo the 4 screws on two hinges underneath the lid and get it off that way.
