Start Switch failed

Got any questions about the BMW's R1200RT/R1250RT's onboard audio, Bluetooth or the Electrical system?

Start Switch failed

Post by Ganesh »

Hi, Anyone replaced the engine start/kill switch on a 2010 RT? It appears to have failed as the bike starts if the relay gets a live feed to it. Can't keep hotwiring the bike, as it gets a bit tricky. Any suggestions amongst the collective? Local BMW dealer can't see it until mid July!!
Thanks.

It's a 10 minute job for a dealer to replace the switch.  Try ringing the next nearest one to you.

Haven't changed one myself, but the Haynes manual suggests it's fairly straight forward. Split the switch, it's in two halves, disconnect the wiring connector, replace the switch.

Done on a 2005 and 2007 model, easy but connector is under the tank so fairing and tank had to come off, well tank lifted.

Thanks, I'll have a look in the Haynes and see how it splits. It does look like one screw underneath but wasn't sure if it had any springs that would fly out. Will give it a go and report back.

Hi RTMAN, the next nearest is Guildford and haven't been able to get through to them. Going to check the switch first to make sure it is the fault and then take it from there.

It's a poor design on the switch, the plastic distorts over time and the rocker mechanism fails. The electrical bit is fine. Thought about covering the switch with some tape after taking the rocker off but it just looked naff. Bought the switch £120 and fitted it in 10 minutes, rather a lot for what is effectively a bit of plastic failing.
