You could fit bar-end mirrors, which I am not a particular fan of.

Alternatively, how about something like this?:  http://www.nippynormans.com/r1200rt-to- ... -2012

Which will allow you to fit conventional handlebar mirrors.

Any stalk mirror that will go through the hole in the controls will do - I don't think BMW mirrors offer any superior view :-)

I used to think that they were poor but now like them a lot where they are.

Where abouts are you? I may still have a set from my 2008 RT.

Having owned three RT's of various vintage I am surprised that you find the mirrors not to your liking. However, having said that I do realise that we are all of different sizes and build which can affect the relationship between rider and the mirrors. This may sound obvious, but have you tried adjusting them ?.
The glass part is adjustable through quite a range as shown in the rider's manual. (page 54 in the Twin Cam manual). Occasionally, I may drop my seat height down to the lower setting (knee problems) and the different height does require mirror adjustment as the line of sight from my eyes to the mirrors is changed. Best of luck.

the problem is i find i either cant see whats behind me, or cant see what's in the lane to my right

it seems impossible to adjust the mirrors in order to see both areas at the same time.

I have the same problem on my 2012 RT - in particular when the top box is fitted (which is most of the time).

After trying some different mirrors with varying degrees of success I ended up with a set of Napoleon Mirrors. They work just fine, and I can now see everything behind me. They come in chrome and black finishes.

I tried various solutions, none of which were successful. Ended up calling Moto- bins who informed that I needed gs1150 mirrors at 36 each for my 09 RT. Ordered, fitted, happy. Just needed to enlarge the left hand hole a bit, all in all, a ten minute job.
