Radio Box/Hump fitting to replace pillion seat on R1200RT

Post by spqrxxvi »

I have a 2010 model (2011 build) R1200RT which has rider and pillion heated seats. I dont like the look of the standard style top box, but love how the bike looks without the panniers so was wondering if I can remove the pillion seat and fit, what I have found to be called a radio box or radio hump, from an ex police bike? I store my helmet and jacket in the panniers when I stop on a ride as they can be locked away securely but I can live without doing this but some storage would be nice. Thought this might be an option. Does anyone know if this can be done or where I might find one of these radio boxes? Are they even called this? I wouldn't be opposed to the top opening skinny panniers which I understand these ex police bikes have if I found some of these with the radio box, will these fit my bike? I live in Victoria Australia. Pictures are found off an internet search. Thanks.

Found this radio box, http://www.rubbersideup.com/2009-bmw-r1 ... 6637698044 and pannier set, http://www.rubbersideup.com/2009-bmw-r1 ... 6548521824 for a 2009 RT.

Would need check whether they fit a later model RT, entering the part nos. into RealOEM suggests they will fit across the K26 model range.

Great information David, thank you. Shows what asking the right people will do! 😊 Looks promising, I will keep the search going.

Try Corbin seats, they make a smuggler for the RT, looks cool, although never scene one in person

Thanks Jim. Have done some looking at the Corbin smuggler tonight and have found somewhere in Melbourne that has them. They are pricy but I'd like to go and have a look next time im in Melbourne. Thanks for the info.

That's a great idea!  I love the look of the police radio box but can't find one to fit my '17 RT.  I looked at the Corbin Smuggler box and it looks great but it costs $1300.  Kind of rich for my taste.

Does anyone know where you can buy radio box kits (used or new?
