the coating of my wheel (rims) is letting loose

Post by w.van.geffen »

Hi forum colleagues,

My R1200RT from 2006 is still looking good, except for the parts where the coating is letting loose (especcialy the back rim).
What can I do myself to improve the looks of it? Or shoot i bring the rims (and the "metal"  side plates) to a firm to have it cleaned (sand-papered) and have it powder coated again. (and what will the costs be more or less). Please help me out. The reason it let's loose, might be caused by the fact that I ride my bike winter and summertime, and the winter salt is eating the coating  >:( .

Thanks,
Wouter

The coating on the wheels can be damaged when tires are being changed.
To powder coat them is not cheap, but changes the look of your bike.
I did my previous bike's rims just because i wanted that metallic paint
that comes out as sun shines. There is a large variety of colors to chose from

I paid about can$300 to have both rims done. To have it coated with just a
high gloss color is cheaper, but if you do it, make it noticeable.
If you just want to improve to looks of the rims, can ad some tape from

Thanks Temesvar. I'm not a big fan of that tape on the rims, but it sure can look cool.
What do you think, is the quality the powder coating better / stronger than the one that comes from BMW? I truly hope it is.
Anyway thanks for your comments  ^-^

The coating is as good as the one that does it! The ones done on my previous bike 5 years ago are like new.
My present bike is 10 years old and the rims are still good. Maybe next year will coat them, with the front
tubes and luggage rack. maybe...
As i mentioned, make sure who changes your tires cares about your rims. Not many do...
