Cigarette lighter/USB unit

Had one on my stolen 2005, wired through to the glove box, and had assumed that it was wired directly to the battery.  Is this the case, or does it have to go into a bus?

To be safe, I would wire the USB unit into a switched live. This will ensure that the 12V-5V DC converter is not powered when the bike is off, thus draining the battery. DAMHIK.

You could try taking a feed off the back of the forward DIN socket.

I don't know how yours was wired, but for the application you describe, at the minimum, ensure it is wired WITH a suitable fuse. It can go directly to the battery, but it would be better if it were from a switched supply.
