24000 Mile Service

Post by buzz »

Just had my bike serviced by Paul at the Workshop in York, he is a BMW specialist and he's done a fab job, his prices are great.
Just waiting to be able to ride it other than too and from work.

Mine's on about 21000 now, so it won't be long.  Trouble is we've lost the services of my go-to BMW dealer (CW in Dorchester).  Real shame, they have looked after me well*  We have Bahnstormer up the road in Alton, but does anyone else know of a specialist in the Southampton area that would not invalidate the BMW extended warranty?

*Not a total loss because they have moved to Royal Enfield; by coincidence I bought a 650 Interceptor last year - brilliant fun.

Under the T&C's of the warranty, you may have your motorcycle serviced by any VAT registered garage as long as they use official BMW parts or those of equivalent specification.

Looks like CW "are still currently authorised for BMW Service and Parts".  https://cwmotorcycles.co.uk/about/

I have mine serviced at Bahnstormer in Maidenhead and I always supply the oil, I have always favoured 15w50 fully synthetic in all my past TC's and as previously said, they're happy to use that because it's within BMW specification for the TC engine so perfectly holds up the terms in the warranty (I bought direct from BMW with BMW European Breakdown etc) and I don't have to worry about them sticking in the 5w50 for the LC's.

I've never found a decent independent to be that much cheaper than a BMW main dealer.

Mine is going in tomorrow for 2 year service. £175 + £10 collect and return 20mile round trip.
Thats reasonable for Dealer.

The 2nd annual service for a Wethead is basically an oil & filter change, plus FD unit oil change.

& filter, plus the FD oil, based on the time taken, they will be charging around £100 per hour for labour.

For the last two services, I've paid a BMW dealer £60 labour only for a lubrication service, I've supplied the oil & filter.
At the dealers, it's fixed price servicing, "the computer says".

An independent wanted the same or more than this for the service. I decided for no benefit in cost, would rather have a BMW stamp in the book.

For bespoke one off items e.g. engine synchronization, I paid an independent £30, BMW wanted twice the price for the same job.

I'll continue to mix & match dealer, independent & DIY for the most cost effective route to servicing.

15w-50 is the current BMW spec. oil for Camheads.

Its more than a little inaccurate to say thats all they do.

There are other checks, Diagnostic and road test etc as the schedule lists. Also warranty issues not associated with the service are often highlighted.

So Dealer just rang Service complete, 2hr software update that covered quite a few systems including Suspension, ABS, Gear Assist and others. Ran Diagnostic and cleared a fault on Alarm that was not detrimental. Picked up and will drop bike off with a round trip of 20miles.

Cost £180. More than happy.
