Given the problems I've heard of, am I better off replacing it on my 2009 RT with the float system?  Expense and difficulty of installation?

It's certainly do-able on the GS models, there's a long thread on UKGSer about it, although you have to be subscribed to see it. I believe that it's not possible on the RTs though, as they have a different ZFE that won't allow it. Someone might know different though!

Yes, the float conversion using the components from the guy in the Netherlands (videos/website mention by other members above) is very achievable, and will likely be quite maintainable long past the crapshoot some have had with fuel strips.

IF you are not having fuel strip problems don’t fret for now; if you ARE having problems your 2009 is covered by BMW for the fuel strip for 12 years from the bikes’ initial in-service date...my ‘09 RT is covered until the summer of 2021.

Based on the 12 year warranty, I'd agree with Gregg, if it ain't broke, don't fix it!

Thanks, everybody, for all this info.  My first step will be to check that the electrical connections are good, then I'll check with my dealer about that extended warranty.  I've seen some vids about replacing the strip, and it seems that, like replacing he headlight bulbs, you need a double-jointed 5 yr. old to get into the tank!

If your fuel strip is currently wonky and still covered by the 12-year warranty that would be the dealers’ double-jointed 5-year-old

Rangemaster, I'll check to see if they have that bendy kid.

Problem solved:  BMW says my 2009 RT is covered under the 12 yr. warranty extension for the fuel strip.  I thought I'd first see if the plug-in connection was the problem, but I reckon I'll have it done anyway given that it'lll probably go out (most likely shortlly after the warranty expires!).  Thanks all.
