Front disc rattle

Post by Nick Evans »

Hello all. I have a 2009 RT with about 34k on the clock. I have noticed that one of the front discs can be moved a bit when you pull on it. I does not move parallel to the axle, but it can be moved radially. The play is less than a millimetre. One side does it and the other one does not. I suspect some of the spacer washer thingies are beginning to elongate, has anyone else seen this?

Some movement is acceptable, it is a floating disc after all. Some models like the k1200 came from the factory with a sloppy rear disc assy. Less than a mil doesnt sound bad

I presume there will be wear tolerances on the floating discs. These need to be checked to be sure.

Dont know if yours is the same.
Fore and aft play may be bobbin wear.

Mine has done the same since I purchased it (at 4,000 miles), now at 13,000.  I presumed it's meant to be that way.

Recommend you squirt some solvent into each bobbin-washer assembly and give them a tug (by hand not with a mallet) back and forth to clear out accumulated brake dust material.  When I ran an oilhead 1100S this reduced odd symptoms of apparently warped discs, and returned brake feel when it had become 'wooden'.    Be careful not to breathe the solvent fumes though - many are known carcinogens!
