Independent Workshops

With servicing and warranties being a topic of discussion, how about building up a list of independent workshops.

What is the business name (a link would be good),  where are they located, are they VAT registered or not and are they linked up to the BMW Motorrad system to record work completed.

Have you used them and would you recommend to others.

Mick Kendrick, http://www.mick-kendrick.co.uk/ Sunderland, not VAT registered or connected to BMW system.

theWorkShop, https://www.theworkshopyork.com/ York, I believe they are VAT registered but not connected to BMW system.

I've only use both the above for minor work e.g. checking for fault codes, re-setting service indicator, valve clearance checks and engine synchronisation.

Yes, I would recommend them.

Young bloke who works out of Chessington, trained by BMW but wanted to start up his own business in about the past year. So far he's wired up a set of Clearwater front and rear lights, together with adding a few accessories for me - I'm rubbish with electrics!
Very careful and capable, it was good to see him solder and shrink wrap the connections rather than use the 'quick fix' connectors supplied with the kit, he also applied anti-seize grease to the fairing bolts before replacing them.
Looking around his workshop, he does a fair bit of custom projects and rebuilds, up to a high standard (to my unfamiliar eye). He also assures me that his work would not invalidate a warranty as he only uses genuine BMW service parts.
His rates are £70 per hour + VAT.

Although not an independent, for anyone with a bike 5 or more years old, Allan Jefferies (BMW Motorrad),  at Shipley have a reduced labour rate of £66 + VAT per hour.

AJ's have been the most recent place I have taken my bike for bespoke servicing.

Fast Bike Servicing offer a mobile service within North East England, https://www.fastbikeservicing.co.uk/ A neighbour has used him for some work on a KTM.

I see from his website that, new services for 2021 include, BMW, service light reset available as part of routine servicing and diagnostic tool for new and old models.

Looks like he knows his way around a 2014 GS, https://www.fastbikeservicing.co.uk/pro ... 00gs-2014/

Have spoken to Paul at the WorkShop in York. He has confirmed that they are VAT registered, therefore can be used whilst still maintaining the T&C's of a BMW Warranty.
He is going to look into being connected to the BMW system.

Meanwhile, at £48 + VAT per hour, probably half what the BMW dealers charge, I've booked my bike in for a service with Paul.

Thanks for the info David, Workshop rate is most reasonable and looking at "The Workshop" website everything seems to be very professional. Probably give them a go at next service time.

Is that using there oil or taking your own? I'm asking for a friend with a GS.

I'm supplying Motul oil and a Hiflo filter, both approved for use by a BMW dealer and Insured Warranty.

The £48 + VAT per hour is a labour only rate. I've been quoted an hour for an oil & filter change plus engine synchronisation (throttle valve) check/adjustment.

The Workshop can supply oil as required. I think they use Rock oil & Mahle filters.

I got the oil & (free) oil filter from BikespeedUK, https://www.bikespeeduk.com/index.php?a ... uctId=2719 for £30, now £32.

Allan Jefferies have confirmed that their labour rate is still £66 + VAT per hour for bikes 5 or more years old.

My bike supplied by Allan Jefferies turns 5 in October so if I wait till after the registration date I get a cheaper service than doing it before the registration date  :))

Exactly, even if you have a warranty, BMW allow you to go 1 month or 1,000 miles over the next service due date/mileage.

Or, go to The Workshop at York, it'll be cheaper and nearer.
