That's a pain! It has been suggested that increasing your front tyre pressure to 38lbs/sq.in may help prevent this, I hope never to find out... but as our fav places to tour are Italy and Greece I suspect I probably will.  :alas:

No need to buy a new wheel as there is a good chance that damaged wheel can be repaired. I did the same a couple of years ago and the repair I had was almost invisible and cost was in the region of £200 including respray. I would have to search for the name and address of the company that repaired mine, but its near Maidstone , Kent (I think). cheers David

Testament to the bikes quality suspension that the outcome was not worse.  Last time I did that (a good few years ago) the bike landed on the deck!

That's a real bummer!! I know because I've had it happen to me.  A new wheel is very expensive, mine actually looked worst than yours and I was able to get it repaired by a wheel repair shop for $150.  After the repair & paint, it looks & functions fine.  My wheel would lose about 3 pounds of air a day.  But definitely it needs to be repaired or replaced.  It's dangerous to continue riding in this condition because the tire bead which is holding the air is now compromised.  I would not want to be traveling at high speeds under these circumstances, a sudden lost of air could be disastrous.

Yep £350 for a second hand wheel, or use Motoliner in Maidstone - Toaster I think that's where you mean. Can't remember where the pothole was, only noticed the damage a few days later, so no chance of suing anybody. And I think Talisker is right, if I had been on my Enfield.....

I seem to recollect that they are only liable if they have been notified of the pothole and done nothing about it. I'd love to be wrong...

I reported a "cluster" of so called Potholes in a dangerous location (on a steep hairpin bend). It took the authority concerned about a week to send someone with a can of white spray paint, presumably to identify the holes to the repair crew. A month later they hadn't been repaired and the paint marking was wearing off. "I give up".

Do not know about your local council but up in the north east if it caused damage you have to report it and then wait one year to see if the local council took action to repair it if not then you can make roads to claim compensation .

I made a claim against the local council for replacement of 2 wheels on my BMW 330.  I had to prove that the knew about the hole, and had not repaired it in accordance with their own published timescale.

I researched through 'fix my street' and their online reporting tool, to prove that it had been reported and was of a significant depth to have been fixed sooner than they had.

A bit of wrangling later, and they sent my a payment of £630.

Just been past the Pothole location today. Success, repairs have been carried out. Now instead of  holes to contend with there are "bumps" but still better than before.
