My RTLE is running out of warranty in December 22 only done 8300 miles , just been qouted £450 for a 12000 mile service from BMW dealership , i take it all dealership costs are the same ? dunno if i should seek an independent service company to save my coppers and then ponder to take out extended warranty later .Any advice is welcome .

AFAIK, BMW dealer servicing is based on "Fixed Rates Times" (FRT) for each task. I've had my Camhead serviced at two different BMW dealers and this was the case. The only variable is the workshop hourly labour charge. When I was last at Vertu Sunderland, a sales guy told me their workshop hourly rate was 100GBP + VAT. Locally, there is The Workshop in York, a BMW independent with an hourly labour rate of 50GBP + VAT.

For 35GBP per month, I take out the BMW Insured Warranty for 7 months of the year (April to October inc.).

Another money saving tip is, supply your own oil & filter.

Some service items are time related whilst others are based on mileage. At 8,300 miles, the bike doesn't need a 12,000 miles service. It probably just needs an annual service. Service schedules are available to work out what needs doing and when. I work out what needs doing and get a bespoke service done after having completed some tasks myself.

£100 per hour. That is one joke of the cruelest. How do they justify that price? Oh forgot it's BMW tax. :seeya:

What is quoted as being done at a 12,000 miles service.

After 3 years and 8,300 miles, I would expect the following items to be done plus the usual inspections.
Engine oil & filter (annually), F & R brake fluid (initially after one year, then every two years) = 3 years.

At 12,000 miles, the following items will most likely be quoted for and not required.
Oil change in rear bevel gears, (every two years or 12K miles) not due until 4 years.
Checking valve clearances, replace spark plugs, replace air filter, all not due until 12,000 miles.

Vertu Boldon gave me that qoute , my service book states 12,000 mile or one year for next service from last one which is October 22.I never informed Vertu that my bike has only 8300 mile as i automatically thought they would carry out a 12,000 mile service being the third one .

The service intervals are every 6,000 miles or 12 months, whichever comes first. Sounds like the bike has done 2,300 miles since the last service. The bike doesn't need a 12,000 miles service, it needs an annual service. Why check or replace items prematurely which are not due.

https://www.bmw-motorrad.co.uk/en/engin ... rvals.html

"The scope of maintenance work depends more heavily on the elapsed time than on the mileage."

"Additional maintenance is required when the mileage exceeds 10,000 kilometres (6,000 miles) a year."

Taking some assumptions in that it was last service last year at 6k

this is what should be done in your next service at your mileage

Agreed, oil & filter, F & R brake fluid plus visual inspections, job done.

Based on the FRT for my Camhead, I would estimate the BMW labour cost to be ~ £140 inc. VAT. Supply your own oil & filter should come to less than £200.

Mine is going in next month for all fluids to be changed and is costing £252 so I suspect @hammo's would be similar priced or should be

Hammo's doesn't need the clutch fluid or final drive oil changing.

Good point

so in theory the service should be at least half of what is quoted
