Waiting for a call back from main dealer regarding a price to fit rear brake pads. What has been other people experience?
I'm guessing it'll be around 150-200 quid.

You could do it yourself, not a big job... OEM pads a bit pricey but you could use EBC or Brembo?

No I'd go with an independent, the place that does my tyres. However, I'm hoping to be surprised by BMW and it costs nothing to ask. If they charged a little bit more than the independent then I'd go to BMW.
Can I fit them myself? I've all the mechanical aptitude of a chimpanzee and prefer to leave it to somebody that knows what they're doing.

Just had a set of pads fitted to one of our fleet bikes. Pads and spring plate (which they quite often change at the same time) £62 (with 10% discount). Fitting was free. But fitting rear pads is very easy and a 15min job if you take your time.

Turns out 200 quid estimate was very pessimistic.
No call back from North Oxford so rang Cotswold Motorrad.
70 quid fitted including new caliper bolts.

Always prefer to do own brakes as most mecahnics wont clean calipers. cheaper and I know done right.

If you know what you're doing, you can have the front and rear fitted within 30 minutes. It's one of the easy jobs to do

Yes its a simple task, but in the video one important step was missed. You know that these rear brakes are called floating calipers. What this means is the caliper is attached to a bracket. The bracket is attached to the rear axle. So now when you apply the brakes the two pistons push the outboard pad against the rotor. When this happens the caliper then slides on the pins to engage the inboard pad against the rotor. If those pins are not serviced to make sure they slide easily, they will eventually seize and let me tell you, you will be in for a whole lot of hurt. BMW has made sure that what should be a replaceable part is not, and if you cannot unseize those pins, its a whole new caliper. I can tell you this from experience. After much penetrating oil and heat applications I got my apart. Took two days. By then the rubber boots where shot. BMW wanted $65 for those two tiny rubber boots. Managed to find a Dorman part that was identical for $11. So make sure those pins are lubed and slide easy.

Excellent detective work!
Are these rubber boots identical across models or peculiar to wetheads only for example?
Regardless of model compatibility, many could benefit from your expertise...
Do you have:
a) The Dorman part number, or
b) A reference to the Dorman model of which rubber boot was a part?
Many thanks for your post.

Whoops I was wrong, its not Dorman, but a Carlson brake part # 16165. It's a kit which by the way comes with 4 rubber boots.
