Getting old

Went into the main dealer today, got chatting with the young chap in sales about how long I'd been riding RTs. Told him that my first one was an R80RT. He didn't have clue what I was talking about, never heard of them.
Now I know that I'm getting old.

Christ Mike!,, You must have been born old if you've been riding RT's all that time

Bearing in mind the number of GS's sold, I'm pleased that he's heard of an RT.

This was my first bike, initially my Dad’s but I took it over some years later. You can tell it’s German… look at that front mudguard!

Then onto Police bikes riding Triumphs and Nortons before getting a BMW R75/6 (I think) as my issue bike in about 1976/7 at Portsmouth, and then this 800 at Fareham.

There are indeed moments when your age catches you, I recently attended a meet of ex-Hampshire Police M/cyclists, and found to my discomfort that I was the oldest one there!

I was always told that no matter what job you are doing learn the history as it gives you a better understanding of the current state of play!

Sadly this rarely happens so just having a chat in general to some people unless its the latest tech they haven't got a clue

Ive had R80RTs in the late 80s and early 90s, but they were a long way from being my first bike. They were a workhorse to commute on, which I used to do, even when snow on the ground :)

Having ridden BM’s from the 70/80’s jobwise followed by unfaired R45/65/80’s of my own in the early 90’s I’ve always held the BM’s in high regard, but buying the 1200RTLC 2 years ago gave me a real surprise in their development in the intervening 25 years that I’d been riding Japanese bikes.
I had actually intended to hang up my boots when I reached 70, but instead I changed the bike… which proved to be the best decision I’ve made in years!
Here’s to the next decade

I'm 65 now, still blood biking so getting lots of riding. But I've had a F750GS for a loaner a couple of times now. Got to say I really liked it, considering getting one to supplement my 1250 :)

Time flies - it is now over 10 years when I took my ex-K1100LT to Austria for my 50th birthday.

I took this just before arriving to Imst.
