At uni, we mostly used open bearings on an array of applications. A lot was run dry or in baths of oil. Depending on what we were testing or making. We tested a lot of ceramic bearings when they were first available.
Trust me I am a retired Doctor and lecturer at Oxford University of Structural and Mechanical/Electrical engineering.
