GS-911 Advice please

Post by Excellence »

Hi
I don't really do clubs or borrowing/hiring stuff so I'm going to get a GS-911 Wi-Fi.
The bike is a 2021 R1250RT and I'll be doing all my own servicing. The warranty is up on March 6th.
So before I dive in I was wondering if anyone has any advice they think might be helpful to me.
Thanks in advance.

I have the GS-911 and no advice to give as I haven't really used it in anger yet!

Done a couple of tweaks like change the tyre pressure read out to PSI rather than bar

You will probably get posts recommending the Motoscan App but I have never compared the two side by side so can't say if there is much difference

Hi
So does one have to download an app to the mobile device to utilise the Wi-Fi? I run a Mac as my main device and I believe the GS will not work with a Mac - is that right.

Yes you would need an app for your phone

But some functions can't be used on a phone

I'm not sure on what works on a mac I'm afraid might be worth checking out their website

You can use an Android phone. From what ive read Motoscan and GS 9-11 doesn't work with Mac or Apple

Thanks for your responses. I bit the bullet a few minutes ago so we'll see how it performs in a few days.

If all else fails just get a cheap windows tablet

I have used one of these in the past and they work well

Is there a document somewhere explaining what doesn’t work when using a phone or tablet ?, I’ve been using my iPad.

I wonder if the functions unavailable thing is about what mode you are in. My GS-911 needs to be in infrastructure mode to access all service functions, rather than in hotspot/direct mode. It means that you need to get the module and your phone logged on to a wifi netwrok with internet access, so the module can access the internet. Easy enough to set up, takes a couple of minutes It also means whatever device you are using as a terminal can also access the web, instead of just talking direct to the GS-911

That's the unit on its way to me.
Does anyone know whether the phone being on active mobile data will suffice for the unit to work properly as if it was on a Wi-if network? Getting the bike to
somewhere on the property within range of my Wi-Fi network would need a small army of contractors!

I tried using my mobile phone via 4g with the GS911 and performed a scan with no issues, I didn’t try and change anything but the phone, gs and Rt were connected :-D

Yes. Thanks for that - good to know someone has managed it! 👍 I contacted Hex about it and they too reckoned that with a sufficiently stable mobile data link it should work ok and link well enough to the cloud, etc.
I should have time tomorrow to do a first scan - we'll see if it works out here in the sticks! 😄
I'm finding that the more I research using the unit, the more I'm learning about the bike's systems - loving it so far.

It’ll be interesting to see if the scan throws up any fault codes. I was recommended to use this website to find out the meanings :thumb:
