Self-service R1200 RT

Post by oscarramirez »

Hi, My motorcycle has been out of warranty for a few months. Can I service my motorcycle myself as I want to avoid high dealer service fees. Does anyone have a tutorial or video that they can share? Thank

Hi and welcome to the forum

You certainly can service it yourself but it may help if you let us know what year your bike is :thumb:

The older the bike the easier and cheaper it is to service at home

Along with the Boxflyer videos, consider purchasing a GS911

Hello there! As a fellow R1200RT owner, I completely understand wanting to save some cash by doing your own maintenance. These bikes are pretty easy to work on yourself once you learn the basics.

For DIY servicing, I'd recommend getting a copy of the factory service manual. It has detailed steps for all the standard maintenance tasks and procedures. Haynes also makes a good manual for the R1200RT.

As far as tutorials, there are some great ones on YouTube. Delboy's Garage has an excellent video walking through a full service on an R1200RT that covers fluids, brakes, plugs, filters - everything you'd need. The procedures are very similar across the 2024 calendar and R1250 models too.

Just take it slow your first time and double check torque specs on critical fasteners. I always lay parts out in order during disassembly so I can put it all back together properly. Feel free to post here if you run into any snags! Lots of knowledgeable R1200RT owners who are happy to help.

Let us know how the DIY servicing goes! Being able to wrench on your own bike is very rewarding. You've got this! Ride safe.

That man is a liability! I recommend ignoring him and following @Boxflyer's videos

They are excellent and very well put together

I watched him when he first started posting videos. I quickly worked out that apart from the very simplest jobs i wasn't sure what he was doing and the way he showed how to fix things was dangerous.

I like to do most of the maintenance myself.
I use a combination of the wisdom from Boxflyer as previously mentionned and also JVB videos I purchased on his website.
Although his videos are not the latest and greatest in video and audio quality, his descriptions and explanations are very clear and helpful.
